  • Dear Susan,

Your post on my blog, "If Jewelry is So Compettive..." was awesome! I felt surrounded by(and hung out to dry) by a group of elitists....I don't know what other nice word to call them.

I think it's great if you want to make every component by hand. But as my husband said, "Who would want to?"

I am certified in PMC, advanced soldering, wirework, patinas, forms, and dozens of classes. I never use a kit or a magazine to spark an idea.

We are all artists because we create something from nothing....a phrase used by Aristotle.

    Hugs,

    Linda

  • Susan,

Haven't been to White Lake in (maybe) 60 years. It was delightful then; we were sailing. And, have lived in Birmingham and mostly in Grand Rapids. Use to sell Frank's a ton of craft merchandise.

Now live in Asheville, old and retired and have taken up making wooden sculpture. Doing rather well for being in my second year.

I won the Kent County "Festival of the Arts" Purchase Award years ago. I played part-time photographer, then. We, who were in the show, had a discussion that there ought to be a show where everyone was blind-judged by a point system. The highest point winners got to get into the show, then rest had to try again. Ann Arbor once was THE SHOW and you had to be great to get into to it or kill someone.

I've really gone the gallery route. I think if you travel to a show, spend 2 or three nights, the cost is higher than the gallery 50% fee. Besides a gallery is working when I am busy making. I've been juried into both Southern Highlands Craft Guild (Asheville) and Piedmont Craftsmen Guild (Wiston-Salem) and will likely do their indoor shows in October and November.

I's Spring here in Asheville! Don't miss the gray Michigan winters.

    Jim
