Years in the Art Fair Business
2
First show ever
I’ve now been participating in art shows for two years, with the Pitman Craft Show serving as my very first festival. After spending more than a decade behind the camera, I felt confident in my photography, but entering the art-show world was an entirely new experience.
Getting my work out of the studio and in front of people gave me the opportunity to hear their reactions firsthand and begin building meaningful connections with customers and fellow artists. At the time, I knew very little about the business and sales side of art festivals. I was largely testing the waters, learning what caught people’s attention, what sold, what didn’t, and how to better present my work.
Each show has taught me something new and helped me grow not only as a photographer, but also as an artist and small-business owner.
What are the best things about art fairs
The best part of participating in art fairs is having the opportunity to experience other artists’ work while also seeing people react to mine. After spending so much time creating and editing photographs on my own, there is something incredibly rewarding about watching someone stop, connect with an image, and share what it makes them feel.
