Wool Felt: insect damage and storage

I use various thicknesses and firmness of high wool content felts in my saddlery work. I have always stored it rolled on racks in a dark corner of the studio. Last winter I noticed "sand" in the thinner felt and thought at the time I must have rolled it out on the floor to cut the roll down for storage, but I didn't remember doing that. When I found thin spots I knew it was insect damage and after looking at the "sand" under a microscope I concluded it was insect poop. Yesterday I found the same "sand" and insect damage to pieces of scrap hair- on leathers. I have since bought some long under bed storage tubs for felt and will probably have to do the same for hair- on skins. I put moth balls in with the felt and the rolls are in plastic bags as well. I have lived here for 31 years and never had this problem. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
