So, I got my first wait list notification today! I have to admit, I'm giddy about it. I know that sounds ridiculous, but this was one of my "shoot for the stars" shows...I had been expecting to be rejected out right, so to be put on the wait list was a pleasant surprise. (I think :) )

So what should I do now? I've seen others recommend contacting the show to express interest should a spot come open...would that mean emailing the director of the show? It's Scarsdale that I've been wait listed for, if that makes a difference. How soon should I contact them, and how often? Is it impolite to request my jury score and my position on the wait list? Would it be tasteless/desperate to let them know that I'm nearby, so I don't mind filling a spot very last minute? (I didn't apply for anything else that weekend, so if I'm not at Scarsdale, I'll have the weekend off).

Thanks y'all!

  • What if the notice you receive says this…..We understand that it is frustrating to be kept on hold, and will do our very best to notify you as soon as we can. Please do not contact us to find out your ranking on the alternate list or likelihood of being invited.

    • Then DO NOT contact them to find out ranking, etc.

However, it still does not hurt to write a short sweet note saying "thanks for the waitlist opportunity. We've heard great things about your show and look forward to an opportunity to participate -- this year or in the future."

As long as you don't ask where you are on the list, you aren't contradicting their request.

  • Thanks for the input Thomas and Alison! I jumped the gun a little, and sent an email this morning (a week after notification and a week before booth fees are due). Just asking about policies, my position on the list, and mentioning that I've close by. Here's hoping the wait list turns into an invitation some time in the coming weeks!

    • Manda,

if I really want to do a waitlisted show, I do similar to what you did. I reply to the waitlist notice thanking them for their careful consideration, and letting the show know that I would be interested if a spot opens. Very low pressure, but you figure, someone might just make a note ...

Of course, I would NOT do this for any show that says "don't contact us about the waitlist" ... and that happens sometimes. Good luck!

      • Ditto - what Camryn said.

Shows don't mind knowing you are interested and eager. Good luck.

  • I've called and not gotten in.  I've not called and gotten in.  I've called and gotten in.  I do think it is reasonable to call and let them know that you are close by and can respond quickly in case of a last minute cancellation.  However at least one show that I know of stops taking people from the wait list a week before the show so last minute cancellations do not get filled.  I think it is reasonable to call and ask about your position on the wait list and their policies.  If it is not a show where you pay the booth fee in advance I would wait until the deadline for booth payment to pass before calling.

  • I would wait closer to the deadline for booth payment until you email the director expressing your wish to be called first off the wait list.

I get called off the list about 1/10 times... So if it's a high quality show it's less likely people will bail. You never know though, as they say 'the squeaky wheel gets the grease' good luck!
