Waterproofing Roof

I recently read something that explained an easy way to re-do waterproofing the roof of your tent using some really ordinary product.  (I have a Caravan with the pointed top).  Of course now that I need to do it, I can't remember where I saw it.  Any suggestions???

Thanks!

  • We took our EZUP EncoreII roof to a marine canvas shop in 2008 and had it waterproofed.  So far it's held up fine for the last few years.  Maybe time to have it done again after this summer.  Don't remember what the cost was, but think it was somewhere between $45 and $60.  Money well spent!!

    • Before my lite dome went to the Land of Oz, we NEVER waterproofed it because it was waterproof fabric.

I'm puzzled by recent threads talking about retro-fitting and now water-proofing EZ ups to make them work. Why get a inexpensive tent to protect your inventory? Doesn't your inventory deserve a tent that is design and produced to do it, without the retrofitting? You spend time and money and love making your art and then put an inferior shelter over it.

The fairy tale of the 3 Little Pigs comes to mind. Is anyone else puzzled by this?

      • Well, my Caravan tent IS an expensive tent and it came waterproofed.  But after several years use, it needs some bolstering to ward off rain pooling on the top of it.  I've also 'retro-fitted' it with additional weights after witnessing what can happen with sudden, unexpected wind 'bursts'.

If I am one of the little pigs, it would have to be the clever one and I'm sure even he needed to do minor maintenance work on his house occasionally.

        • I'd like to put a smiley face here!!

My EZUP Encore II has survived rain, near tropical storm force winds (lots of weights) and for the little bit of maintenance expense has been well worth the money.  When I was starting out, the EZUP canopy was what I could afford.  The frame is in "like new" shape and rather than spend upwards of $1000 or more on a new canopy, I'd much rather go to Flourish and get a new waterproof top for a couple hundred dollars.  That being said...for newbies, there are multiple grades of EZUPs, so you have to shop carefully.

          • Hear Hear!!

My EZUP Encore II was brand new last spring. Top of the line in EZUPs. It takes me 20 mins to unload and set this baby up. I don't have to have a special system devised to keep all the parts together with the mates. I also don't have a helper when I do a show and most shows only give you about two hours for set-up. I cannot afford to spend an hour and half piecing together a tent that in IMHO would be a huge expense and a general pima to utilize. I spent MY $$ on a quality, easy to use product, that makes MY business life much less complicated and saves me HUGE amounts of time and frustration. If you want t categorize that as being "the three little pigs" then by all means- OINK, OINK!!

  • I investigated the product we used to use for tent seams, Norm says it is called "Seam Sealer" and it is purchased in the camping department of chain stores.
    • Thanks for all the info!  So if it ever A.  Drys up and B. Warms up, I'll be out in the driveway spraying away!
  • I found a product at Gander Mountain.  Can't recall the product name, but it was in a spray can and was priced about $5 to $10 each.  Use 3 cans and worked great.  I found a similar product on amazon.com

    Hope this helps.

    • this is the silicone spray my husband uses.  it lasts all summer and he has had no problems.  we were able to use it yesterday, it was 'warm' enough to use it.  of course it isn't warm enough to put the boat in the water but right now, the sunshine is a pleasant enough surprise after the least sunny april in weather history.
  • I can't picture the Caravan, Cassandra. We always had heavy duty EZ ups, the Majestic and Imperial. Every season we'd bring the tops inside and lay them out on the rug and apply a roll-on sealer that Norm got at the hardware store. We'd coat all the seams inside and outside. It worked well.

(and you didn't have to wait for the weather ;)
