I'll be heading to New England for the summer shows in my RV.  Space hasn't been an issue in states with lots of land like out here in AZ or when I'm close to home in FL.. Anyone have any tips for  RV'ing on the cheap?  Staying at one campground probably isn't the best idea (or the cheapest), as shows range from Long Island to Maine. Has workamping worked out well for anyone?  My husband is extremely handy.  Thanks all!

  • I managed RV "Resorts" in TX, IN and PA and workcampers were (are) a vital part of the preserves. It's a lifestyle thing, not a career or financial option since most are minimum wage plus free space.

I also rv camped (30 ft trailer) during a 5 person family + pets job-searching road trip from Ft. Worth, TX to Berlin, NH, and unfortunately back, but the Swanzee, NH (near Keene), Timberland (Berlin, NH) and Brattleboro campgrounds were all very nice, reasonable and had pleasant managers. I had also camped at a campground near Rhinebeck, NY that was great for our Civil Air Patrol group. Art fairs were not a consideration at the time so I have no idea if any of those were near art fairs.

New, new - I am now involved in running an established but newly growing art gallery on a perfect resort venue two hrs from NYCfor a major art fair in the Pocono Mountains. Interest in starting a yearly art fair - grounds, restaurants, major resort inn and many local campgrounds... Any interest, advice?

  • I remember when you gave me a rest and a soda at Mailtland setup.  You're welcome to our driveway any time.  Unfortunately it is in Virginia but if you need a stopping place on the way up, let me know.
    • Thanks!  It's great to have this forum to keep in touch.  Were you around for the otter incident at Maitland?
  • What shows are you going to be doing up here in New England?
  • Check out Passport America.  For the $44 annual fee it came in really handy on our cross country trip.  Some of the campgrrounds are a bit out of the way, but most have full hookups.  We were pretty pleased with them -- never a hassle.  I've never used Happy Camper, but I think it's about the same.

    • And P.S. the WorkKampers we checked into had year-long waiting lists and required a minimum 3-month stay plus 40 hours per couple.  Evidently there's a pretty high demand for those spots.  Who knew?
  • There are a few campgrounds on eastern Long Island (Hampton Bays, Montauk, East Hampton).  I don't know too much info but can give you names if interested.  I might have driveway space depending on the length of the rv (looks pretty big in the photo) and if I can get my husband to move his motorcycle trailer.

BTW - your work is amazing!

    • I  always wondered who those people were that parked in the Walmart lots.  It makes perfect sense to me since you aren' t there for the recreation but to work so you don't 'need' scenery!!
    • Oh I am already very thankful for him!  I know I don't have to worry about him being bored, and he has been very good at finding odd jobs.

FL Walmarts: most you can stay overnight in, except in the hoity toity areas like Miami and Naples.  I'm checking out the state parks along the New England shore this week, but LI has so many damn rules and regulations that it's close to impossible to stop and boondock for a night or two.  We'll see.  I've got to spend Monday on the phone making inquiries!

    • I know of the LI campgrounds, they're KOA's and they are ridiculously expensive, plus you need to make reservations at Hither Hills in Montauk about a year in advance..  When we go to the Island we'll probably make arrangements to camp in friends' driveways.  Our 5th wheel is 39 feet, it's a beast.  I am not looking forward to the BQE.  Where are you?

BTW, thanks about my work.  I've created a few new pieces here at the Expo which I need to get shot and post!
