Square vs. Amazon Local Register

So the big gorilla Amazon has thrown their hat into the credit card swipe ring.

I've been an extremely happy Square user for three years.  Sure, they take their cut, but it's relatively painless.  With Amazon I saw the fees were lower, so of course I thought "Why not!" and ordered a card reader.  Signed up, entered all my information, and waited to give it a go.

I tried it once, for a $500 local sale, a special order.  And I have yet to see a dime.  First I could not verify my account on their app -- it has a couple of bugs.  Called customer support, and they were very nice and quick to help suggest what to do.  I verified my bank account via faxing my statement to Amazon.

I still can't get my money out of them.  They have a 14 day hold on everything.  And add to that, they now say that "after 100 transactions there will no longer be a hold."  Excuse me?  I have supplies to order NOW.  I have bills to pay NOW.  I can't get my cash from them as it is, and they want me to hit it 100 more times?  I think not.

Just my .02 -- your experience may vary.  But you can tell, I'm frustrated.  Square is going to keep getting my business.

  • I've had a similar experience.  I was offered 0% processing to try Amazon as a vendor at a gift show in Tacoma.  It took 3 weeks to set up the account due to their technical difficulties, also had trouble uploading then faxing in my back statement to get it verified.  Once at the show, I had to set up a transfer after the first day of sales to transfer the money in to my bank account, which they said hadn't been verified (they sent me an email 5 days prior saying it WAS verified).  So I still don't have my money.  Had to fax in another statement today, so hopefully I'll see my money soon.  I'm staying with Square.  It is much easier to use, they send my money automatically every day.

  • I posted a thread when I first saw this. Amazon is all about growth, and That is just plain nuts they are holding your money. I started with square and sticking with them.
  • If it ain't broke...don't try to fix it...!

I've been using Square for years and have no complaints. I also have used Intuit go-payment and it also worked fine...so I keep it as a backup. I haven't tried Amazon and do not see a need to do so.
