I was a first time exhibitor at Gasparilla this year and I must say, I was honored to be there. I live in Tampa and I have been going to this show as a patron for years. Back in October when I got the acceptance letter, I was in shock. Because to me, the best of the best are in Gasparilla. I am relatively new to the art show scene, but I have quite a few shows under my belt. All in all, I had a great experience at this years Gasparilla, but unfortunately, a few others didn’t fare as well as I did. Here’s how the weekend went:

Thursday- Set up Day

Over the past few weeks, we have been receiving emails and information about the load-in/load-out process. Basically, you could request a load-in time from the selection of time slots given to you. The catch was, the earlier you chose to set up, the later you were allowed to load out. So, for example, I chose to load in at 10am on Thursday (very first load in time) my load out was 7:30 pm Sunday night (2 ½ hrs after the end of the show). I’ll get to that later.

I arrived Thursday morning at 8:30 am at the off site Check in that was just about a half mile from the festival grounds. Check in began at 9 am. At 9:45am, they lined us up by booth number, caravanned us to the festival and led us directly to the front of our assigned spot with a 2 hour time limit to set up. Smooth. Easy. Uncomplicated. I have no idea how everyone else felt about set up, but I thought it was great.

Friday- Another Set Up Day-

I was not here that day so nothing to report.

Saturday- First Day of the Show!

I arrive at my tent to start my day. It was a warm day in Tampa. People were already at the event well before the 10 am start time. By noon, the place was packed. At around 11:30am, the judge came around to each tent. My art, as well as, four other artists around me were given yellow ribbons that said that our art was selected to be juried. (More on that later) For me, Saturday was a fantastic sales day. I had 6 sales (my art ranges from $75-$500) and lots of interest for commissioned pieces. My buddy next to me (collage art) and a fine jeweler in front of him didn’t make a sale all day. By 3pm, the winds started to really pick up. Chatter about the upcoming storms was everywhere. By 6pm, we battened down the hatches and went to the artists hospitality tent for some beer, wine and munchies.

Saturday Evening- Awards ceremony

Anyone who was given a yellow ribbon had to take their piece to the Tampa Museum to be juried by 2:30pm on Saturday. We were given info about the new event the were trying called galaRE: This event was to give distinguished patrons the opportunity to view the festival juror’s selected artwork and to rub elbows with the winning artists. We received one free ticket to the event and anyone else who wanted to go had to pay $40. When we arrived at the museum, our art was displayed on tables and easels. The distinguished patrons were over in the VIP section with food and cocktails. We were standing around our art with a few hors d'oeuvres and wondering what we were supposed to be doing. If you won an award, a ribbon was placed next to your piece. I did not win, so I promptly headed to the door to go home. The next day, I was told that there was no “awards ceremony” at all. You picked up your prize money with your art on Sunday.

Sunday- The day the rains (and winds) came

At 4:00 Sunday morning, I woke up to the sound of wind howling and torrential rain. I had a sinking feeling that my tent was not going to be where I left it. As I drove to the show, you could see the tents that were set up by the road took a beating during the night. Someone’s tent had flown across the street, weights and all. Many of these artists decided to pack it up and go home. I don’t blame them one bit. My tent was fine because I was in the middle of the park. Sunday started out much slower than Saturday. The festival workers told us at 10 am that the show was not officially opening until 12pm because of the weather. Seeing as though we have all been here since about 7:00 am, this was slightly annoying. But what can you do? A few brave people were walking through the show with the gale force winds and cold temps. By noon, the weather was beautiful. Mr. Sun came out and shined on us. It was still extremely windy but people were there and buying. I sold an additional 4 pieces and ended the weekend making a fantastic profit. My buddy next to me still didn’t sell anything. But he won an award, so he was happy. I had the Best of Show winner’s booth right in front of me. He won the $15,000 check. Needless to say, he was pretty stoked.

Sunday Load Out

There was no way that I was waiting for my 7:30pm load out time. So I decided to cart out. I parked in a very close by parking garage and it only took 4 trips to get everything packed up. The show ended at 5pm and I was out of there by 6:15pm. Many other people did exactly the same as I did. Unless you had a great load out time given to you, I think this was the best way to do it.

The people in charge were very nice, the had free food for us both days and volunteers were constantly coming around asking is you needed a booth sitter. All in all, I had a great weekend at my first year of Gasparilla and I hope to be invited back next year.

  • Hi Lisa

THank you so much for your in depth recall of your experience showing at Gaspirilla art show. I live in Palm Harbor and I have wanted to try to that show since I started selling my art. The problem for me is that I have my tent set up at the Bay Area Renaissance festival for 7 weekends and it always overlaps with Gasprilla. gah!! It sounds like you did really well though, congrats!. Have you done any other art shows in the area?  I live so close to Clearwater, Dunedin, Safety Harbor, Palm Harbor and Tarpon springs and I know that  there are a lot of art shows in these towns. Have tried any of them?  are there any you recommend? or suggest I should avoid?  thanks! Deanna

    • Hi Deanna!  Thanks for contacting me :)  I only do arts shows in this area.  I don't travel too far because I have 2 little ones at home.  I looked at your website and your drawings are BEAUTIFUL!  Have you ever heard of The Atomic Bazaar in Sarasota?  I think you would do so great there. The people that are accepted into that show have a similar style to yours.  As for shows in the area, I have applied so far to Dunedin Art Harvest (I love this show), CraftArt in St. Pete ( I think you should try for this one), Winter Park Autumn Festival (Orlando), and Hyde Park in October.  I don't think you should avoid any show because if one show is bad for me, it might be great for you and vice versa.  I use Zapplication.org to see all of the shows in the area.  I also like to do city chamber of commerce shows.  Have you done any shows here in Tampa?  How long have you been doing shows?  I look forward to hearing from you :)

      Lauren

      • do you have a website for the CraftArt in St. pete?  I have done a few searches on google and cannot find it. thanks :)

        • Hi Deanna,

Here is the website for CraftArt.  It is put on by the Florida Craftsman Organization.  http://floridacraftsmen.net/ It will have a link to CraftArt on it.  I appled last year and got waitlisted.  They contacted me 2 days before the show and invited me, but I had booked another show in its place.  I applied for it again this year.

That stinks about the Atomic Bazaar.  I think you would rock there.  Maybe you should try again?  I had an issue with a huge promoter here (Howard Allen) in the beginning and I swore him off.  I tried again a year later and it turned out to be one of my best shows ever (Hyde Park).

The art fair world has so many rules.  It really is crazy.  Gasparilla had so many rules. I have never been a vendor at a convention type setting, but I have a feeling they are a completely different beast.  There is a home expo show in Orlando that I have always wanted to try.  I may be contacting you for some advice on indoor convention shows :)  Once you follow the rules for one art show, all the rest of them are pretty much the same.

The people on this website have helped me so much.  I never realized how important you tent set up was.  About 3 years ago, I was being rejected to every show I applied for.  I put a picture of my then booth on here for people to critique.  After changing my booth around, I got into every show I applied to.  I have yet to be accepted into Mainsail.  This was my 4th year trying and they wont let me in.  I have heard they like "High art", which is not me. I am considered a fine crafter, I guess.  I have not been to the Palm Harbor show.  I was a patron at the Safety Harbor show and it was nice.  It was not my niche so I would not have sold a thing.  But I enjoyed walking around.

There is alot of rejection in these art shows.  My first year I really took it to heart.  But you learn from the criticism and make it work.  Alot of times I will visit a show before I apply to it the following year.  Take a look at what the other people are selling.  You will be able to feel if it is a show for you.  I will go to a show and instantly know if I belong or not.  I drag my husband and kids to SO many shows :) they hate it but whatever.

Here is a website from the Arts Council of Hillsborough that you can sign up to be apart of.  They will email you when there is a "Call for Artists".  Take a look. http://www.tampaarts.com/Call_to_Artists.aspx

Are you on Etsy.com?  If not, you need to be.

I am going to friend request you on here, so it will be easier to talk.  Also, read all of the Newbie forums on here.  It helps alot.

          Lauren :)

          • Hi Lauren

thank you for the link for the Craft Art show. I cannot do it anyway because I am at the Sarasota Medieval Fair which is Nov 10-11 & 17-18. My Ren fairs seem to overlap with a lot of the art shows, but there are a few I might be able to do.

That is good to know about Mainsail. I doubt they would consider my art "high art"....I don't think fairies and vampires would be up their alley! lol

I try to check out art shows too before I sign up for them too. That is what I have been trying to do since I moved to Palm harbor last year. I visited the Palm Harbor art show and it seemed ok. There were not too many vendors there, maybe 60? It didn't seem like a lot of people were carrying around purchases either. It looked like a couple of artisans were doing well but there were selling lower priced items as well so that may have something to do with it. I may try it because it is not far from my house. It is hard for me to tell if my work would do well at these shows because there is nothing like it there. I think that is a good thing, but I don't know what the jury thinks about it. I also have my artwork on products like jewelry, bookmarks, etc. and it seems I would not be able to sell those items at these shows which is a bummer because they do pretty well for me at the Ren Fairs and conventions.

I may try for Atomic Bazaar again. I do receive the emails from Howard Allen too, but never tried one of their shows.they seem quite strict which scares me a bit. :(

I have been reading some of the posts on here too, but I need to read more.  I am part of a fantasy artist forum for many years and I have been able to get a lot of good advise through those artists too. any information, critique, warning, I can read up on, is beneficial though! lol

I am on Etsy. here is my store if you want to check it out:

            http://www.etsy.com/shop/deannadavoli

how many propanels do you have in your set up?

At my indoor conventions, I would only need 3 since it is usually just a wall behind me. Like my booth here at Dragon con, but I have gridwalls instead:  http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1006542733843.2000683.1533...!/photo.php?fbid=1575012665236&set=a.1006542733843.2000683.1533159093&type=3&theater

oh yeah, if you do an indoor show and have any questions please ask me. If I can help, I will! I find that indoor shows are much easier because you don't have to deal with the tent, weather and they typically provide you with your chair/s and table. makes it a lot easier!

            cheers

            Deanna

      • Hello Lauren

I pretty much do art shows in the area now too as I have a 10 month old girl :) so I know exactly what you mean. hehe

I actually did apply for the Atomic bazaar once and was not treated so well by the organizer. it was a few years ago, but he wouldn't respond to my emails, and then finally rejected me because he said that he had enough art.  Since I didn't like how he handled the situation I never bothered to try again.

I have only done Renaissance fairs and sci-fi/fantasy conventions since that is my subject matter. I have not heard about all of the shows you mentioned but I am compiling a list of websites and shows so i will add them too it.

I have been doing the Ren fairs and conventions since 2006. Most of them are in the area but I have done a few conventions out of state (before the baby of course!) but my travel expenses didn't make for much profits at the shows so I backed off from doing them. The only one I plan on doing out of town now is called Dragon Con. it is in Atlanta, GA. I have a good following there and I also have 2 friends up there so it is sort of a vacation and working weekend.

thanks for listing the shows too. I have been looking at the art shows and they have so many restrictions I am not use to. for example, not allowing open edition prints, books, notecards, art created before a certain date, etc. The Ren fairs are much more laid back about that kind of stuff...but they also don't have huge cash prizes! lol

have you ever done the Palm Harbor Art festival? or the Mainsail Arts Festival in St. Pete?

  • Lauren.  Ah, I see.  Seems odd but then if it works, why not.  Nice review.

    • Thanks Bruce ;)
  • Good review Lauren and I liked your work! I did want to add that the rumors of there being no awards ceremony were (mostly) untrue. The ribbons were on the winning pieces and if people waited at the party for a little while, they would have heard the names of the winners announced. We did pick up our checks on Sunday, with our piece, if it hadn't sold the evening before.
    • Hi Shannon, I am so glad that the winners were announced at Gasparilla. And congrats to you for winning one!
