Problem with Caravan spring clips. Am I alone?

I got a new Caravan Display Shade & set it up in the backyard to take booth pictures. While a slight breeze was blowing, the pins that adjust leg height would pop out & release causing the legs to shorten. I made sure that I pushed the pins in, but it still happened, repeatedly & to all 4 legs. I assumed that I got one with weak springs & called Caravan. They said I was the first to report this. They are sending out new clip/spring mechanisms.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with the clips on a Caravan canopy?

I didn't have weights installed at the time, just 2x4s sitting across the leg base (foot?) with 20lb rocks on them. When I do make my weights, they'll be made of 5" square white plastic fence posts filled with cement & they'll be velcroed to the legs, not suspended from the upper frame. They're a copy of these EZ Weights http://www.ez-weights.com/Order.htm. I like the fact that they span the joint between leg sections, so a strong wind won't bend the leg at that point.

Am I wrong to not suspend the weights from the frame? Is the weight what will keep the pins in?

  • I have seen discussions on other forums regarding weighting tents.  I personally weight my canopy with weights I had fabricated that slip into the bottom of the leg and bolt to "feet'.  The piece has another post that I can place weights from a weight bench on each foot being able to vary the weight.   My fabricator welded the piece on at an angle so the weights are under my tables so as to not be in the way of people walking.  I also have cement weights that I attach to the top of the frame.   i usually run these on the inside of the wall area so the sides won't blow into my displays (jewelry easels).

Let me know if you would like a picture of the piece I had fabricated.  Will be happy to share.
