ok, hauling art work

I paint on either stretched canvas or panel, up to 24X36in.  I have an ext. cab dodge ram truck with an 8' bed and a snap tarp cover, which collects dirt since I do alot of country road driving (I paint cows and pigs and bulls and country landscapes).  Dreading the day something happens to my truck with over 177,000 miles on it, I'm debating what to get next.  I don't necessarily need 4WD, but I want it to sit higher than a car does since I do drive out in the country, and have a habit of taking minimum maintenence roads. I have propanels that stack, so they're 3'X3'.  I can either lay them down or stand them up, but I don't know if I would have to look at a blazer, an explorer, a van... any suggestions?  I drive sometimes 4.5 hours one way to either photograph or haul art, so something kind of decent on mileage would be good but not necessary since I'm used to driving a V8 ram anyway.  Everything fits nicely in the bed, to the height of the bed so something enclosed I can go up, I wouldn't think I'd need another 8' length to pack.

Also, any suggestions on how you pack your paintings so nothing gets poked, scratched etc?  I have been wrapping mine in plastic bags to keep the dirt off, and using cardboard sheets between.  Thanks!
