Did anyone do the Norwalk Art Festival by Gordon Fine Arts at the end of June in 2013, which I thinnk was  the first year? Looking for some feedback before I decide on the application.  Any customers/business? Thanks.

  • Hi Laura,

I've been meaning to post my review, just did so.  It should be available in the show reviews section very soon.  Here's a little preview:

If you are an artist based in the northeast, it's definitely worth doing.  If you are in the midwest and planning to be in the northeast during this time, also worth checking out.

Sue Brown Gordon is a longtime exhibitor and knows how to run a good show.  She is a jeweler and a painter, plus her husband David Gordon is a painter and both have been on the show circuit for a long time.  Sue Brown Gordon is also the director of the Outdoor Art Festival of the Bruce Museum, and the Outdoor Craft Festival of the Bruce Museum.  She cares about the artists and about jurying for quality and variety.  You can expect tasteful music and better than average food on offer.  Show sizes tend to be small, you won't see 300 artists at her shows.

I had decent sales (though some artists zeroed or weren't happy with sales) and there was good weather for last year's inaugural show.  I look forward to seeing how things turn out in 2014.

I have family in the area, so expenses are reasonable.  Otherwise, try hotel deals, the show is located right off I-95, so it can be easy to access less costly accommodations in nearby towns.  But in this area, it can be very expensive!

Prior day set-up is helpful, spaces are on grass, some have a little shade, some don't.  If you have special requests, try to give advance notice.  Staffs tend to be small, though helpful, and with surprising talents--Last year, several newborn baby bunnies were found in some booths, the staff helped keep them safe from predators until they could be returned to their nest at day's end.

I hope this show grows, it's just the right sort.  Great location on the grounds of Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum and Center for Contemporary Printmaking, so it's got a history of attracting people who are interested in art.

    • Thank you, Carol, I so much appreciate your lengthy and comprehensive reply. It is a great help.

I did apply to the show and hope to get in- I am a jeweler, so it is tough- and happily I live in the NY area so Norwalk is only about a 45 min drive.

Thanks again, and hope to meet you in Norwalk!
