New member introduction...

Hello everyone and let me say that AFI is a great place to be for a new artist, as well as many of you experienced artists.

With that out of the way, allow me to introduce myself to the membership and tell a bit about myself.

My name is Richard Scott Pack, but I go by my middle name of Scott. I have been married 29 years to a lovely woman (Sherri) and have two of the best sons a man could ask for.

I got into this business as a way to bond and be closer with my youngest son Tyler, who btw is a photographer. My oldest son, Brandon soon sparked interest and joined us in this venture. Together we each offer a different style in art. My son Tyler offers photo prints, Brandon offers his Fiber Light Artwork™, and I do digital paintings/renderings of photos I take.

AFI has been a blessing for me, as I am totally clueless to the whole artist / art fair scene. I have owned my own business in the past and understand the fundamentals of business, but this foray is out of my knowledge base. Thus my luck in finding and reading posts by other experienced (seasoned) artists here on AFI. To each of you for gratefully sharing your knowledge with us inexperienced newbs, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

My wife and I live in Kentucky near Louisville. We moved out of Louisville several years back to a rural community. My sons have since moved out and now the wife and I are empty nesters. :)

Although I do not have the talent to paint, or sculpt, or do the conventional types of art, I feel that, although digitally based, my sons and my work is art. I suppose time (and sales) will determine just how much others consider it art.

I (we) have only setup for one showing, which after doing the show it turned out to be more of a farmer's market than a place for any form of artwork. I am trying to take things slow, get into the cheaper (perhaps non-juried) fairs or events to get a feeling of what people think of our work before going any deeper than I have financially.

Although we don't have a factory built art wall, my sons and I built our own, and I think it turned out fine. We are in the process of building more as some shows (I read) do not allow tables. (And in my opinion, if it is suppose to hang on a wall then why display it on a table?)

Homemade wall:

I will post images of our first both setup and samples of the type of work/art we do. I welcome your feedback (positive or negative) on the images and work. (The only way to learn is to listen to others that have years of experience in a field.

First and only booth setup. (Tables are going on next one to be replaced with more walls above.)

MY DIGITAL PAINTINGS (SAMPLES)

AFTERNOON NAP

THE HARBOR AT TUMBLEWEED

PAPA'S WATERFALLS

When I am not creating artwork I am busy building our website: (http://www.packsdigitalimagery.com) Still working on the site and trying to build out the store we hope to use in our sales.

Basically that sums things up in a nutshell. I look forward to conversing and someday contributing my experience with others on AFI.

Best Regards,

Scott Pack

  • Hi Scott and welcome to this site. Starting to do art fairs can be a huge investment with canopy, display, etc.  You are wise to start by making your own display until you definitely know you are in this business long enough to justify the expense.  You can always upgrade at a later date.  What shows to do is a learning experience.  Attending different art shows watching where the customers are purchasing can give you some insight as to what sells at certain shows and the price range.  If artists aren't busy, many will be willing to share info.  Good luck on your new adventure!

    • Thank you Pat for that insightful comment and words of encouragement. As a brand new artist I am taking things slow, or as finances permit. I have made some significant investments so far; canopy, art supplies and a new wide format printer. So my budget this year is pretty much blown, and we have yet to put on a show. But we are going to use this time to build up our work and get some things ready for when we do our first showing. Hopefully not too long as I need to begin to recoup some of my out-of-pocket expenses. I hope to learn everything I can before our first show, and continue learning more from this site and all of you here on AFI and other web sites.

      Thanks again for your insight...

      Scott

  • We're glad to have you join us, Scott. Sounds like you are ready to be involved here and "get" the online part well. Very smart to start small and local and how wonderful that you can work with you son. I also work with my son and it is wonderful to be able to continue to do this.

Any chance you will be attending the St. James Court Art Show in Louisville? I highly recommend it not only to see the art, maybe buy some, but to see the great variety of exhibitors, booth setups, pricing structures and marketing options. It will be like Art Fair 202, way beyond 101 :)

We look forward to your participation here. With your background I'm sure you will have lots of good business advice for others. Please join in.

    • I plan on attending St. James Art Fair. Hopefully I will run into other AFI members there as well. If you are anyone see me please don't hesitate to say hello.

  • Hey Scott, welcome to our group.  It looks like you have a great start.  I am sure you will learn much more in our forums.  We also look forward to seeing what you have to share with us.

I really like your digital paintings, especially "Afternoon nap."

    See you around.

    • Thank you Jacki for the warm welcome. Hope to become a regular on here...
