My first show (I hope)

I am planning on entering an Art 4 Sale Exhibit. My question is what should I enter. http://www.vmurfin.zenfolio or http://www.redbubble.com/people/vmurfin My ideas are a Flower picture, a bird picture, and maybe another flower picture. Also, if I get accepted, do I enter more of the same pictures that I entered for the juried exhibit or can I entered different pictures to sell. I hope this make sense. Thanks for any help.

Yep, we did this show for a few years also. Jury with your very best work. If accepted take work that you think will sell, including, of course, your jury images. Linnea is right -- they want to make money, as do you, so price "to sell."

This is the Fort Wayne Museum show? I got the prospectus a few days ago. I did it some years back…long enough ago that it’s probably not relevant. I didn’t jury, but was invited because I had just had an exhibition there.

The ones you send don’t have to be identical to the jury shots: just in the same style. After you jury, assuming you are accepted, I would contact them, and ask what they are looking for, for you to actually send. Ask about price points. I remember they were very helpful on the phone.

Since it’s commission, they are looking for sales…so small and salable is probably best. Maybe even cards, if you have them. In my case, they asked for smaller, lower-priced pieces similar in flavor to the one of a kind sculptures and jewelry I had had in the exhibition. Ask about their attendence figures too. Indoor shows in winter don't draw many people.

  • When I'm jurying I usually send a combination of pictures. My "specialties" are shore birds and butterflies, but it depends on the show. If it's a wildlife or waterfowl oriented show, I don't send in the butterfly pictures. Since I sell a lot of notecards, if I'm mailing in pictures for jurying, I send them in a notecard.

As to what you can sell, you should be able to sell anything along the same lines that you sent to the jury. For example, if you sent in painted pictures for a jury selection, you should not sell photographs at the show. Some shows allow a small percentage of "other" items, but most only allow what you juried in with. There may also be a restriction on categories of photos. For example, they may have a limit on the number of wildlife photographers versus the number of flower or fine art photographers. Check with the show to see if the photographers are categorized.
