Would you consider a painting that uses two mediums, ie: acrylic and watercolor to be mixed media 2d or painting?  I'm grateful for the helpful people here and thanks for your responses.

  • Gosh, this is an older thread with no comments. I wouldn't consider that mixed media and I wouldn't be worried that a show will flag you for misrepresenting your art by calling it "Painting" instead of "Mixed Media 2D." And your question is certainly valid and worth greater discussion since it's probably a common consideration. I think most artists will remain discreet about it so that they don't call attention to a possible infringement or something. Shows and judges would be overbearing if they were that critical. That's not to say there aren't shows that are more critical than others.

I've had one minor incedent in my 18 year career when I mentioned to the on site committee judge "My wife does the paintings and I handcraft the picture frames." She said, "Don't tell me that." And when I asked her why not, she told me that my wife's name was the only name on the roster. That's not my fault since 75 percent of the shows never acknowledge that my wife works with a collaborator and we so state it on every application. Plus, probably 100 percent of the shows state "NO BUY SELL" and nearly 100 percent of all picture frames used by artists at shows are STORE BOUGHT (Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc.)

  • Anyone?  Or am I thinking too much like a painter in separating different paints into media categories in terms of show applications?
