Well, Michigan is gonna be a rough ride this year, thats for certain. But Im not giving in! What doesnt kill you makes you stronger right!?!? Besides being an artist, youre asking for a kick in the knee anyway. Its a tough way to make a living.
With the obvious stated... are there any folks doing michigan art fairs this season that have advice? Are you lowering your price points? are you doing more smaller pieces? Are you not doing as many michigan shows and going elsewhere? If so, where?
Also, I just got an email from the Great Lakes Art Fair at Rock Financial. Is anyone doing that one?

Hi Vesna, I am still doing my full schedule of Michigan shows this year but have also added a few Ohio shows. I did a little better in Ohio last season and hope it will be good again this season.
Now that the country is basking in new hope and is in high spirits, maybe people will be more inclined to make feel good purchases, like artaand this seasons art fairs will start to show improvement.
I am also planing on doing more shows this season to make up for lower per show sales and I'm also being careful about pricing, makeing some adjustments down an lower priced items.
I am doing the Great Lakes Art Fair because it is an additional show to my schedule and the first of the season and its indoors. It's a show that Mark Loeb is involved in and I do a couple other shows of Mark's and he does a good job but of course in this business, their are no guarintees, just hope.

I'm a crazy Michigander also, but with a lot of optimism! For the most part last year was one of my most successful. I will be doing more Mi. shows this year, keeping the past shows that are good for me and dropping those that aren't. I am applying to the top shows in Mi. like E. Lansing and Krasl(my third time applying, fingers crossed) and others. I have added smaller pieces to my works, which has helped. I have kept my prices the same and have raised on some pieces. Regardless if the piece is large or small,the most important thing for me is to put the most effort and skills I have into each piece and the customers will come, downturn in economy or not. I also highly recommend sending out postcards to past collectors and those that have signed up for the mailing list with your schedule.
It may be a tough way to make a living...but I would want to do nothing else!!
