I have been working in this medium (solar pyrography; i.e. https://vimeo.com/33470004http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.155035494362.142808.129787749362&type=3) for over 30yrs, and although I know of some others (mentored a few myself) I've never seen anyone work like this.
Because it is 'out-of-the-box' it tends not to 'stand well alone' without the PERFORMANCE. I am looking for some Fairs/Festivals that draw more than the 'stoic-stuffed-shirt art types' - this tends to be fun and engaging; sometimes having passersby join me.
I live in Key West (kindof an 'event' almost daily), a relocation from MI in quest for sun so am looking for places primarily in the S.E.

....... thanks in advance, any ideas or suggestions are appreciated!!!

  • Durf, in the eyes of many, I guess your post is the cyber-equivalent of walking into a Porsche dealership and asking about a good deal on a Yugo.  :-)

There are a couple of websites that list shows (by state, if you like) that have a more family-event feel at which your performance art would be right at home.  Try www.artfairschedule.com and fairsandfestivals.net.  Good luck!

    • thanks Geoff, I guess I did ask for a OLDS (and I didn't realize they had sold me something else)...... funny part is - it doesn't really matter. Reminded me of the early days working with a band and going into a club to hear another band - "I'm better than he is", "We're way tighter than that", "They don't do anything original", "They suck." In those days my response pretty much was, "Be the best you can be, do the best you can with what you have; don't necessarily 'chase' the money. And, most importantly, have FUN sharing!!!"
I firmly believe that ART is way more than just about the money, it's about making an impression/thought process, a connection, and leaving a mark (even if it is 'just burnt wood'). I remember in the mid/late-80s working a 'rap show' and wondering if it was satire/comedy - to each his own!
If it makes someone feel better about themselves, critiquing/slamming another - I consider myself a good target; I move slow! They can fire away..... doesn't change a thing!!!

  • I insult you?!?!?  I'm crushed.  All I ever do is praise you, at least behind your back.

    • You're not crushed.  You are probably laughing,

I was just giving you grief cuz of what you said to me on Monday.

You know how I feel about you.

  • Connie, I appreciate your kindness to Durf, telling him to post here but after the reaction the other guy who did performance art  got, did you really expect anything different?

Most of the states have websites with all kinds of festivals listed.  You are not necessarily looking for an art festival per se but a place where you can demonstrate.  Because of the space that your demo would take up, if you are determined to do art festivals, it seems that it would be easier for you to contact them directly rather than go through a jury system.

Durf, what do you do when it rains?

And Durf, I understood that you were referring to patrons as stuffed shirts and not artists and I didn't appreciate it.  Barry Bernstein insults me enough, I don't like it when strangers do!!  ;-)

    • lol..... thanks; twiddle my thumbs at the bar, sometimes!

    • okay, Geri, for sure we have to meet this summer! Thanks for my laugh of the day.

      • I'll be at Krasl.  Can you make it there?  Except for a pit stop at a McDonalds, I have never been to Michigan.

    • lol..... thanks; twiddle my thumbs at the bar, sometimes!

  • I know most of the people in this business wish every event was just about the "art" -- me too. The fact is, they aren't. Some events don't even pretend to be such and there are lots of events out there that people love and go just for the fun. I suggested Durf start this thread because I know many of us know about events where there is no pretending they are about the art and was pretty sure we could point to him to some of them. There are shows where there are buskers and street artists, performance art people around the edges. What would be some examples? What about Wyandotte?
