Las Olas report

Hello Friends Las Olas was windy most of sunday. Some light rain intermittently in the afternoon. Fortunately, things settled down for take down. It was gusty wind and it was neccessary for me to put my glass on the carpet in my booth for a while. For the good of all of us I am confessing I put up my booth with no roof so that there would be better light. A tall building was going to shade my booth for most of the day and the weather report looked ok so I went topless. Never again unless the weather report is reliably clear and calm. The rain was not too bad but I think no roof allowed more wind into my booth and with less structure it moved more in the wind. Not very inviting for looking at glass. A good part of the day was survival mode. I am thinking about pro panels because of how they support each other from the bracing bars and can be tied into the booth frame. Sales were off for me. Saturday was promising and ok but Sunday onlyhad several close calls with good sales. It is such an interesting mix of people in the crowd. I had a fascinating conversation with a man from south africa who is a set designer for opera productions. We really got in depth about color. The next person asked if our work was acrylic... I have had more follow-up business from this show than any other. Gave out a lot of cards. I used hot wire for my hotel last minute and stayed at the Doubletree for $93 in Sunrise. It was a 20 minute drive but a really nice quiet stay. I would be interested to know from long term exhibitors expect weather challenges at this show from year-to-year. It rained on sunday last year and now I know I should have known better.

  • Paul- I used to do all 3-D work that I displayed on pedestals. Wind was my major problem. 3 yrs ago I started doing 2-D and got some Pro panels. If I had known at the start what a huge difference the panels would be in helping to keep the wind out of my booth, I would have gotten them when I started! Yes, it makes my set-up take longer, but is so worth it. I got mine used. Keep your eyes open. Quite a few artist have been changing to mesh and selling the Pros.
