I opened Venmo personal and business profiles because my clients had requested its use. Maybe a year or more ago I got a notice from my bank that there were problems at Venmo, but I assumed they would have solved them by now. In June I got a $500 payment from a client, and I just received another $500 payment for saddle orders. FYI, Venmo is a division of PayPal but there is a world of differences. Here now is the saga.

  1. Every time I tried to log into my business account the system took me to my personal account, and I had $0. I found out you cannot log into business profiles from a computer. You have to use a mobile device. Isn’t that just a great way to run a business.
  2. Once I got into my business profile I followed the instructions to transfer my $500 less fees to my bank account. Their system uses Plaid. Everything looked good and I got a message “account has been successfully linked”. But then the evil genies of technology sent me a message “something went wrong getting your bank account”. The second try was the same.
  3. Back in June I remembered that a tech who phoned me said to transfer from business account to personal account, then transfer to the bank. This time I could not get a tech to call but I did get some emails and there was back and forth but not this instruction. I did that and it worked or at least it said the transfer was going through.
  4. Last but not least, I sent another email requesting that my business profile be closed but I wanted to keep my personal account open. I am only doing this for my client’s convenience. As the Rainman would say “Venmo Sucks”.

TodayI lost a minimum of two hours of studio time with a short fuse for my next show but I needed the $500 so persisted.

  •  I do not know about Venmo but thought it was a peer to peer.  I have zelle but it is to receive a monthly payment, same person and payment each month.  I had to cancel Cash App, also peer to peer, in order to prevent someone from actively trying to get into my account. I wouldn't have any strangers using my account, not even customers.

    • I also use Zelli. PayPal has worked well for several years both domestic and international, Canada, Australia and Europe. Other than that it's Vusa, MC, Discover. No one has ever asked to use PayPal at a show.
