How to do price tags for paintings

I'm an acrylic painter and am gearing up for my first juried art fair in 4 weeks.  I definitely want to put prices on my paintings, but I'm just curious how other 2D artists do this.  I'd love to hear how others out there are doing this.  I don't want my display to *look* like it's my first art fair. :)

Thanks!
Amelia :)

  • I use a label-maker, too, but as I use mesh panels, velcro doesn't work for me. At one show, I saw an artist using the little plastic pockets used at conferences for name tags/business cards, and they looked pretty good. The pockets have a pin arrangement at the top on the back. I attach my labels to the back of a business card, insert them into the pockets and pin them to the mesh screens.

If anyone else uses mesh panels and has a better idea, I'd love to hear it.

  • I print them 8 up on a standard letter size sheet of fine art paper, laminate using a heat-seal laminating machine, then trim them to size. Then I put a couple of velcro dots on the back, and they can be reused over and over again with my ProPanels.

My database is set up to make gallery labels, so I can generate one or many at a time.

I also put a QR code on them which links to a specific page on my website, where the piece can be viewed. Lets those be-backers have a good image for reference, you know, to show the wife and kids.

  • I do mostly what Warren says, except I don't laminate them. I print the info onto micro-perforated business-card paper, and use adhesive velcro dots on the back to stick to my Pro-Panels. Laminating would be a nice touch. My cards do curl slightly if there's some humidity.

  • Thanks for your replies to my question. :)  I did find a few other threads on the forum this morning and read up on how some people do their price tags.  Connie, I like your idea of going to art fairs before mine and getting ideas... in fact, there's one in a couple weeks put on by the same group, so that might be a good place to go.

    Amelia :)

  • I have a P-Touch lable maker machine.  I use clear tape with white letters but there are many other options. I make the size visable so that you have to look for it but not so big that it hits you in the face.  Dont use Avery labels and an ink pen.

  • So sorry no one has replied to this question, Amelia, and I can't be of any help. My best suggestion is to get yourself to some art fairs in the meantime, if you can, and see what others have done. I have seen small cards stuck on the walls next to painting with the prices and we always had a card with the name of the image and the price that we put next to our photographs.
