How much weight?

How much weight is the appropriate amount for a tent?  I'm a jewelry artist and won't have Pro Panels to help.  I'm looking at purchasing a Show Off or Lite Dome 10 x 10 tent and know that many shows don't allow stakes, just weights.

  • I have two different weight sets. The first are the typical  4" diameter x36" pvc pipes filled with cement.

The most recent I have been using are dumbbells that weigh 40 lbs., each. I tapped 1/4" threads in the ends and can screw in eye bolts.

I painted them white and hang them with ratchet straps. I also fasten them to the tent legs with ball bungees. I have had a lot of compliments from other artists at shows about the dumbbells painted look and the way the hang. These are my favorite because they are very easy to transport and take up much less room than the other weights in both the tent and van and don't roll around in the van.

  • and even better the Eatons are friends of mine! Jim was/is an industrial designer besides being a recently retired from the art fair business sculptor. He is busy now designing more helpful products for artists.

  • I second the Eaton Canopy Weights.  I have enough for 75 pounds on each leg.  I usually do 45 pounds unless high winds are called for.  They are about half the price of Happy Feet although they are not as pretty since they do rust.  They have a very small footprint which is nice when you are at a show with tight booth spaces.

  • Thanks Bill.  What is your choice for weights?

    • Eaton Canopy Weights. 15lbs each. Just stack them up on the leg base. Easy to transport. We had a fabricator weld two steel cylinders to a steel base and set it in the back of the van. Eight weights per cylinder. The weights aren't cheap but we really like them. Others use Happy Feet and seem to like them too.
  • We do 60 lbs/leg unless the forecast is absolutely perfect and then we'll still put 30 lbs per leg.
