I was just accepted to do the Kentuck Festival for the Arts in Northport, Alabama on October 18-19th. We were excited to be invited to the show. My wife started contacting hotels, Air B&B, and doing the normal online hotel searches that she does so good and efficiently.

It seems that the local college football team is playing a game in town that weekend and virtually every hotel is within a sensible driving distance is already booked or charging highly inflated rates for any  still available rooms.

Has anyone done this show before and run into this situation?

  • Check national parks and KOAs in the area. Many KOAs also have cabins, too.

  • This is a real long shot -- but have you goggled "hostels"? I have stayed in two different ones in Chicago in the last six months, yeah, I know Northport is not Chicago.

    • Thanks Connie. we're looking at any available options. What is a Hostel?

      • Hostels have been around forever. Originally small places where backpackers could share rooms and baths for a low price. Still like that. Group rooms with the bath down the hall with lounge areas where travelers could hang out together, share travel info and food. Most have kitchens and have breakfast and a refrigerators to put your own food. Check out http://www.hiusa.org.

I stayed in one in the Chicago Loop for $45 @ night. It had a nice lounge area, tvs, charging stations, access to all the museums nearby and recently at one near the Old Town Art Fair in a trendy neighborhood with bikes for rent, tour guides and even guitars you could rent!??

  • Have you looked to see if there are any local campgrounds with cabins...they are not luxury but in a pinch might be do-able.

    • Pauline...We are looking into all options we can possibly find.

  • Congratulations!  Every home game weekend is booked up years in advance and what rooms are available are usually cancellations and rebooked at very high rates.  Crimson Tide fans don't seem to mind paying whatever to see the Tide Roll.  Hope you have a great show!

    • Unfortunately if I cannot find an affordable place for us to stay we may not be able to participate. We never realized it was a football town with this room problem.

      • Greg, Have you tried https://www.airbnb.com?  It's worth a look.  And maybe call the promoter and ask if they have any ideas.  Good luck!  I know I always worry about that and I'm pretty choosy anymore about hotel rooms.

        • Laurie...we have used airbnb before (used it just recently in Nashville) and it is a great service but nothing was available. I also spoke to the promoters today and nothing as of yet...hopefully.....
