Display stands for sculpture

I'm fairly new to this forum and new to the art fair business.  I'm a wood sculptor and as such need stands to display my art.  I've researched a number of sites and have some ideas.  My question is, "Have any of your made your own display stands and if so would you mind sharing your experience?"

I've been thinking of making my own mainly to help highlight my art.  As such I would make them out of wood and stain the instead of buying the ones that have a fabric finish on them.  I've attached a picture of one of my carvings to give you and idea of what I'm talking about regarding my sculptures.

My tent will also have mesh walls as I also do relief carvings which are hung.  Trying to make since of this and display my art in the best way possible. Any feedback and advice is greatly welcomed.

  • Your sculptures are very earthy. Why not play up that feeling by using weathered wood for your pedestals? You could take four planks, stain the raw edges to match the fronts and put metal or fabric hinges between all the planks so they will fold up. Then make a top that will fit down over the four planks when then are folded out. This is how Armstrong makes their fold up pedestals. Wood ones would be heavier, but they should certainly hold the weight.

By the way, love your carving. He looks like a mountain man from a Louis L'Amour novel.

  • Thanks for the suggestions.

Chris, I've seen pedestal express and they look pretty good.  I've got extra wood in my shop and was trying to save some money, but they are pretty economical and already finished.  Are they heavy enough to stand in wind?

Kevin, I like the idea of a different color on the top for a contrast.

Do any of you have suggestions on height?  I was thinking of just going with 30", 36", and 42".  I think 48" would be too high and 24" too low.

    • You can put weights in the bottom of them. I haven't needed to yet. My sculptures are all different sizes  so I needed a lot of different ones. So far I really like how easy it is to set-up. I don't break them down. I have enough room to haul them all.

Sounds like your sculptures are heavy.

      Hope this helps.

  • I use pedestal express-pedestals and really like them. Very light and fast set-up. Not a ton of money in them also.

    Good luck.
  • If you go with wood would do a piece of wood with a piece of matte black metal attached to the surface

It would give the art a great contrast that it IS made of wood.
