Hi there.  I am an artist in the Toronto Area (more like Guelph) who makes miniature framed silver sculpture and some jewelry.  I have done the Toronto One of a Kind show for the past 3 shows and have been accepted into the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition in 2 weeks.  I've bot my Trim Line Tent thanks to the comments on this forum (cost me an extra $500 just to get it here:)), and am looking to know if there are any other GTA area artisits on this site and if they have any tips for the TOAE.

FYI, I've taken a lot of flak from fellow Canadian artists for buying such an expensive tent, but just knowing that if there is a rainstorm in the night I won't have to fret too much is well worth it to me.  Any support would be welcome:).

One last question.  I would love to do a higher end outdoor show in the States within a days drive....Rhinebeck???  Only prob is I like to do everything above board and don't know if any accomodations are made for out of country artists?  I know the One of a Kind Chicago employs a central cash system so they are legally the vendor, therefore, no tax issue for Canadians.  Any suggestions?

  • Hi Suzanne, great to find you here. Lorie MacDonald is pretty active on this site and is from London, I believe. Find her in the member list and email her with specific questions. Maybe we need to start a Canada group, maybe a comedian group also...?? The One of a Kind in Chicago does not emply a central cash system. That is very un-American (includes CA).

There are lots of shows in Michigan and a trickle of Canadian artists come here for them. I'll be thinking of others that are within an hours drive -- btw, there is one in Windsor.

    • Thx Connie.  I was told by my neighbour vendor 2 times ago at OOAK about the central cash.  She must have been mistaken.  Thanks for the info.

      Sue

      • Maybe its an option. But I'd think I would have heard of that. It is very large and spread way out, I can't think how a central cashier would work there.
        • I just put a comment on Lori's profile. Thanks for leading me to her.  I've already learned a bit about a few of the shows I was thinking of doing just from reading her blog!  I LOVE getting real views on shows.

What the hell is all this talk of allowing comedians into the art shows?

Don't we have enough problems with all the newspaper hawkers, buy/sell merchants, primadonnas, musical acts, wine merchants, drinking festivals, and window sellers, half-assed promotors, blacklists, and internet thieves from South Africa? Now we have to contend with comedians?

Don't get me wrong - I like comedians, I really do. Buddy Hackett and Henny Youngman were absolute geniuses. I grew up on Richard Pryor and George Carlin. Still love watching George Burns and Jerry Lewis. . . . I always try to recite at least one line from "Caddyshack" every day (as most guys do) despite what the Mrs. thinks is funny and not funny.

I cried at the bar for literally days when Sam Kinison died.

I love Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, h.l. mencken, and I love listening to Prairie Home Companion as well as the old classic radio stuff, anything by National Lampoon, Redd Fox, PJ O'Rourke, Bill Cosby, and even Mad Magazine - but I see no reason whatsoever to allow comedians into the art shows anymore than artists should be putting paintings and pottery on the comedians' stages while they are working their gigs.

We should keep the comedians out of the art shows.

We have to draw a line in the sand right here. Where's this NAIA outfit on this issue?

    Start chanting folks:

No comedians at the art fairs,

no comedians at the art fairs,

no comedians at the art fairs,

No comedians at the art fairs,

no comedians at the art fairs,

no comedians at the art fairs,

No comedians at the art fairs,

no comedians at the art fairs,

no comedians at the art fairs . . . .
    • I'm thinkin' this is an issue for the NAII
    • Hey Emily Litella, she is from CANADA, not a comedian.

(well she may be funny but that isn't the point)

      ;-)

      • Oh.
        • Nevermind.
          • Munks, that brought back many memories of Gilda Radner on SNL.
