So I just checked Zapplication today and found that I was invited to the Brookside Art Annual - very excited.  Now I must decide.  A booth in the big tent they put up or an outside booth.  There is a $100 difference, with the big top being more expensive.  Thoughts?

  • I went with a booth under the big tent.  i have attended the show as a spectator many, many times as I live in KC.  Usually it is packed.  It is however in May, which could be cold, could be hot.  So we will see.  Thanks for the input Barrie.

    • Kale, we only did the show once. There were tornadoes in the area, so we left on Sunday morning and the show did shut down early that year.

IF the weather is good, being outside is really nice, plus the load in and out is really easy. Reconnoitering in the big tent takes patience for setting up and taking down, and you don't have as much storage space. But if those cons are not a problem to you, the tent is very nice and cozy and you don't get missed. Hope that helps.

      • That's right, Connie. I had forgotten 2007 was worse. That was the year and weekend of the F5 tornado in Greensburg, KS. Wiped out the whole town in the night on May 4, 2007. That's across the state, mind you, but Yes, we had tornadoes right there in KC as well. Flooding all over the place. The show ended early for us both years due to torrential rain with 2007 being the worst of the two situations at the show.

Good luck with the show, Kale Please come back to AFI and post a review for us. I'd love to hear about it and many others will as well. I like the show and think the world of Donna Potts. She's one of our industry TOPS in my book. WOOHOO!

        • I still need to post reviews for last years shows.  The Plaza and Westport both in KC being my best two shows.

          • Would love to see those reviews, Kale. We've revamped that whole site and it is easier and more straightforward to upload the info. Thanks.

When we were doing shows we were able to build a loyal clientele also. Even years when we did Cherry Creek and it was good, a few weeks later we'd be in Ann Arbor and the sales were even better. July was the "break even" month.

        • Donna is just terrific. She is on top of it all, little staff, and produces a fine event. Just look at the roster of artists who are there and you know, she does it all.

          • I have heard great things about Donna and the fact that she is so open to artists is great.  The last two years I did not get in and I asked for her thoughts on why.  She was very nice but honest and that really taught me a lot about applying for the bigger fairs.

  • I should say that there's probably not a booth that won't get seen by patrons at this show. It's a well-attended show.

  • I did the show twice, 2007 & 2009. Had to cancel 2008 due to hospitalization. Glad I was in the big top tent near the far end. Huge reception Friday night and the bar was right by our booth. Rained like hell both years on one day, with Sunday being a total wash out in 2009. You'll set up your tent in the big tent. I'm glad I was in the big tent.

Congratulations and hope you do well. I won my category award in 2007, but sales weren't good enough for me either year to return. Maybe it would be better now. I might do it again some time.

    • Hey, Barrie -- I think we were there in 2007 also ... a narrow miss again!
