  • Had a friend who did it once, swore she would never go back.

    • What was your friends medium ?

      • Digitally modified photography.  Amazing work that won quite a few awards.

  • It looks like you aren't getting any help here because evidently nobody knows about it.

So here's what I do when I hear about a show.

First, how did you hear about it? From some fellow exhibitors? A flyer? An ad somewhere?

Have you researched the show? Do they have a website where you can download the application?

What type of show is it? Fine art, fine craft, arts and crafts, anything goes?

Do they limit the participants in each category?

How long has the show been going on? First year? 10th year?

Does the promoter promote any other shows, or is the show a money raiser for an organization?

Nobody knows what your monetary expectations are for any particular show, but from what you can glean, could the show meet those expectations?

Is that particular show on a weekend that's open and you're looking for a filler?

I hope these things that I do help your decision.

    • Chris has given you some good pointers. A good rule to go by is when asking about a show, state the exact name of the show and its location. We're talking about the Bloomin' Arts Festival sponsored by Bartow Art Guild in Bartow, FL.

Here are a few more tips since I'm Florida show savvy.

What other shows are happening the same weekend and possibly nearby? It's the same weekend as the biggie in Tampa, Gasparilla Festival of the Arts, and it's in very close proximity. 45 miles. Howard Alan also has one this weekend just 75 miles south in Venice. Then there's Downtown Delray Beach Craft Festival, but it's 200 miles.

What other shows happen in the area throughout the year? I know there's Lake Wales, and it appears they've moved it forward in the year. This year it's one week prior to Bartow! Are you doing Lake Wales? You probably should be. It's 15 miles east of Bartow. Many of the heavy hitters will be in Lake Wales and then Gasparilla.

How much award money are they offering? Looks like $12,000 total with a $2250 Best in Show and then some other really decent 1st and 2nd prizes as well as other money. Lake Wales, the week prior, has $24,000.

      • Heck. I just looked at your AFI info page and see you've been doing this for 26 years and that you live in Inverness, FL. Like you don't know the ropes in Florida? Silly me.

        • Yes Barrie, I have been doing this for a long time ( I need to update my profile, started in '84), But it never hurts to get another opinion on shows, which is why I "asked"..

          I appreciate the insight .....

  • Never did this show.  I don't even know where Bartow is, if it's a city or the name of the show!  LOL  Lotta help I am! <vbg>

    • Thank you Laurie and Cindy. (The show is in Bartow Florida, near Tampa.)

  • Gotta say , I wish someone would comment on my post.  It is really disappointing to post something and not get any replies . even if the answer would be , "No I haven't done the show"

         :(
