I'll soon be selling our art fair van. It has been sitting in the driveway too long and the guys at the garage say it needs better tires to make it safe. Do you think I should sell it "as is" or should I put better tires on it? It has 170,000 miles on it -- road miles, and otherwise is in terrific shape for its age (1995) as it has had loving care by a very meticulous person.

This is gonna sound strange to many people, but around here new cars are not the norm, and sometimes money is too tight to spend $200 each for 4 tires on a vehicle you're gonna sell. So all the tire dealers have good, used tires. Usually they're tires taken off when new tires are purchased and have on average 50% of the tread left. And at $35 to $50 each, they might be the solution.
Thanks for these options. It helps to have various opinions. Next, visit our friendly neighborhood garage to make sure that otherwise it is road-ready.
If it were me I would let the buyer decide and you can also use it as a negotiation tool. You might put Gooodyear tires on it and the buyer might be a Michelin tire fan.
I use to be a car dealer, if your trading it in the tires aren't going to make any difference. If your selling it privately it may be a concern to the buyer, but you can factor that it when negotiating price. No point wasting your time when a lot of times the buyer wants new rims and tires anyways.
I'd sell it as is and let them decide which tires they'd like to buy!!
