Let's meet up. Will you be at any art fairs this weekend? How about the extravaganza in Minneapolis where you'll find Uptown, Powderhorn and Loring Park? I know a bunch of you are heading there and setting up today. How about Glenview in Chicago, or Bay Harbor or Colorado. Those last two sound like dream destinations.

  • I'm at Uptown right now and it's awful. Weather has held up okay, decent attendance, but very, very few buyers. I'm a nature photographer and they put me right next to another nature photographer --STUPID! Heard from folks at Loring and Powderhorn and it doesn't sound much better (but at least their hours are shorter!) There are just way too many shows in Minneapolis, and it's stretching the dollars too thin. Edina was the same way earlier this summer.
  • There are corners?  I was hoping to get the same spot as last year.
    • You do have the same spot, but if you go around the corner onto 7th and down a little way you will find the ones you are looking for.
  • I'm driving up to Lake Okoboji to check out the art fair there.  Got turned down two years ago, but want to go look it over to see if it goes on the list for next year.

I should be in bed already, haha.

    • Home again, home again, jiggidy jig....

I'd say if you are local, Okoboji would be a good venue.  For me, a 3.5 hour drive, hotel...probably not a good bet.  It's a cute little festival (about 100 artists in a park just off the lake) that is nice and open.   Lots of people, but my impression is that folks are there to enjoy the watersports, and they walk the festival because it's there.

I saw no signage in town or near Arnold's Park (the amusement park area) advertising the show, which was a red flag for me.  Water, restrooms, and trash cans were not to be found in the show area.  Another red flag.  Lots of jewelry - no maille, I remember only one silversmith, the rest were primarily strung pieces (with the usual "juried in as glass but selling glass JEWELRY" sprinkled around) and a few wire wrappers.

I ended up buying some note cards from a photographer, a stained glass hummingbird for my garden (HORRORS...."GARDEN ART") and a vase from Connie Braunschweig (I have a number of her pieces).

It was a fun day, and I'm glad my friend and I went up there!

    • Nothing like a busman's holiday, Lynn! We often attended art fairs when we weren't doing one -- checking out the next big thing and adding to our information of possible events. Very smart.

    • I have a Loke Okoboji guide book that a friend brought me a couple of weeks ago.  I was looking at pics of that festival and wondering if that would be a good time to visit the friend.  Let us know what you think.  Have a great busman's holiday.
  • Wish we could meet up - either your neck of the woods, or mine! I may get back to Michigan one of these years. It's Friday evening and it's really buzzing down in my little town with artists and food vendors setting up for the weekend's events. It is the 2nd annual Earth Awakening Expo., although it went through a name change this year and is now called "Summer Daze". This is a town-sponsored event (the Pine-Strawberry Business Community), and not one that our Arts & Crafts Guild does, but I will certainly be supporting it. It is happening in conjunction with the Rim Country Bike Race, so this sleepy little town is full of activity right now. As Summer Daze is only in it's second year, it will be interesting to talk to the artists and see what they think. This event is really different than our customary Arts & Crafts Festivals, as it includes a Health Fair, massages, Yoga, metaphysical stuff...So that's where I'll be, just checking things out and seeing what unique item I can find that I just can't live without!
    • What city is this in, Joy? Sounds like a cool summer festival.
      • It's Pine, Arizona. We are about a l hour drive east of Flagstaff or 2 hour drive north of Phoenix.  People flock up here from Phoenix in the summer to escape the heat.
