Just now driving back from my first show Art at the Domain Austin. The show was pretty slow. Lots of browsers, card takers and comission talkers but no sales at all. Most artist said they made nothing at all or they ended up making just the show fee. The residents in the condos above the show would come down from their condos and ask what we were setting up for. Seems like lots of the people living right there had no idea there was a show. Also, the pamphlet that lists all the artists and has a small photo of there work had my name with someone elses art next to my name. I asked the show director about it and she shrugged and said "Sorry, oh well it must have been a misprint cause I had 5 people review it before it printed."

  • So, as someone who spent 11 years in TX and now wants to return for a few good shows in the spring, I've been told to avoid Austin at all costs.  Just not profitable for artists.  Big surprise to me, I would have thought Austin to be a good market for art shows but think we'll continue to bypass that area for now.

  • Thanks for this info, Gwen.

So, was this a new show? How many exhibitors? is it run by a promoter or is it a community event? What is your media? Do you know, Gwendolyn, if anyone was making any money? Are there any good shows in Austin? Surely seems like there should be.

(Are you just beginning to post info here? If so, I hope you don't mind that I added the photo to the discussion, it makes it more interesting for the rest of us. It is almost as easy to add a photo as an attachment. Do you see the "picture frame" icon in the toolbar about the comment? Click on that and you can easily put a photo right into a post. Also, I added "tags" -- those are identifying words so your post can be found again -- see the ones I added.) Looking forward to your next post. Thanks for being here.

    • This show is in its second year. Ot is run by a promotor. I do oil on canvas. I heard of a few people making sales but everyone else was complaning of no sales.
