Anyone made nice homemade pedestals?

I have to admit that even though I prefer tables for a lot of reasons, they are keeping me out of bigger shows. While it's too late for this year I thought I would start revamping my whole set up with cases and pedestals. Well at least half of it.

I really hate that I am being made to conform (you know us non-conforming artists!) to get into better shows. I've been looking at the jewelry at the better shows and while lovely and well made, mine does look different than the pieces I've been seeing. Why have three gold artists with tension settings when you could have something different? Oh I get it, I don't use cases so my stuff must be cheap.

My favorite part about the shows is keeping my rings in the open and having people try them on and talk to me. We all lean on the table ( nice sturdy thing!) and chat. Them standing at the front and me sitting (yeah!) on my tall studio chair.

So I guess I have to spend more money that I won't get back and get to jump through the hoop. I'm really having trouble with this as you can tell. Any coments and plans will be appreciated.

  • Here's another "buy" option, Robin. If you go to the Suppliers tab at the top of the site you'll see pedestals from pedestalexpress.com. Worth a look -- nice, lightweight and collapsible.

You also might look at the post I did a while back where there is a nice jewelry booth "pedestal-less". Here's the link: http://www.artfairinsiders.com/profiles/blogs/how-do-you-like-this-...

    • Thanks! I'll check them out.

  • Here are my two cents :-)  I ordered my pedestals from xylemdesign.com  They are very reasonably priced and ship fast.  It may cost less to buy from them.  Elle

  • Hi Robin- I have made a handful of display pedastals- some easy to build and assemble.  Tell me, what size display areas do you need, and how much weight to be held?  In your 10X10 what size footprint will be designated for these?

    • Hi Ray! I have Jewelry so the weight won't be an issue. Even if I get cases they will be lightweight plexi - darn another thing I have to figure out!- I would like to keep maybe one six foot table and then have perhaps four pedestals toward the front. I am thinking a foot to 18 inches square. I guess they have to be just a little bigger than the cases. Since I usually do shows by myself I don't get to look around much but I'm going to a show (that I didn't get into!) and check all this out. thanks - Robin

      • I just need to know can I go ultra light like with Luann? Do you put a back on? Toe kicks? What kind of hinges do people use? I can adjust sizes. And I have built things before but didn't want to start from scratch when I know people have done this a lot.
