Hello Everyone. I am new to the art fair world and today have begun applying to 2013 shows. The category question has me a bit stressed. I am an illustrator. My process evolves from thumbnail sketch, to computer illustration to laser cutting to hand painting or staining. Some pieces are purely decorative and some can be used as wall hooks. Attached is an ornament, hand painted and signed with golf leaf and cord, and cut from wood.
QUESTION: Is this category WOOD or MIXED MEDIA or ???
Thanks!!

  • Hello Jill.  Love you work.  Just thought I would let you know.  Will this be your first year in shows?

    • Hi Jacki.  Yes, this will be my first year. I will mostly be sticking to to the west coast of Michigan as that is where I live (near Saugatuck) plus maybe a couple near Chicago or the Detroit area.

      Thanks for your interest!

      • Jill, nice new ideas!  A little critque is that I'd hide your knot's where the frog is holding the heart.  My eye was drawn right to them and you don't want that.  Can you make the yarn a little longer at the end of the knot and hide it behind the frogs hands with a little glue or somthing.

How have the shows been in the Saugatuck area?  We haven't done them for a while, is the park show doing well?

        • Great suggestion, Jacque. I will change the knots and make use of glue.

Next summer will be my first attempt at art fairs. I don't know if the Saugatuck shows do well or not, but I only live 5 miles from downtown so that would be extremely convenient. Town is typically a zoo all summer, so I know they get a lot of traffic.  If I get in, I'll write a critique.

          Thanks, Jacque.

  • No Problem!  If you have any more questions/concerns, please ask!!

  • Hi In my opinion, I would say it could go either way.  Mixed Media usually means the incorporation of at least two materials into a piece, which you have with wood and watercolors.  You probably could also apply under wood, considering that the primary compostion of the piece is wood.  It has been said, although unproven, that wood is easier to jury into for a lot of shows.  When in doubt, though, just read the prospectus for the show, most have category definitions.  I am a Mixed Media artist and after reading some prospecti, I have found that I would be better suited to apply in Sculpture, instead of my usual Mixed Media.  It can all depend on the show!  Good Luck!

    • Hi Elle.I will take your advice and search the individual prospecti for each show.

I appreciate your advice and feel a bit better that you, too, think it doesn't neatly fit into either category!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and time.
