We got home last night from Ann Arbor, and are SOOO glad to be here! Our show was down just a tad from last year. However, having brought along three teenagers last year (and three vehicles!), I believe that we'll come out considerably ahead. Our shows in general are just slightly down or the same as last year. I have med. to high hopes for the rest of the year. We've actually cut down, in the last couple of years, the number of shows that we do. As aging potters (Soc. Sec. eligible in a few more years), it's so much easier on the body to stay home and ship out wholesale. But I also need the feedback and energy from a show to keep things fresh. Thanks, Connie, for this forum.

  • Great to hear from you, Karen. Just a "tad" down doesn't sound altogether bad. We participated in the Guild show for around 15 years, in a great booth on Main Street. Wonderful crowds, easy parking, good restaurants, and shade. Not so necessary this year as in prior years.

If I had to place my bets I'd guess that people who do nice looking functional work will continue to hold their own...the combination of function and aesthetics should win the day. Tougher selling 2D work, for sure.
  • Congrats. I am seeing at most of my shows that functional art is not suffering as much as 2d art. People can always gift functional works so I am thinking this is part of the reason.
