4 Art Scholarships Awarded

For the last 49 years, the Chesapeake Bay Art Association (CBAA) has awarded scholarships to deserving Art students in the greater Hampton Roads community. This year 4 scholarships were awarded. The winners are Jessica Evans from Poquoson High School, Terron Sorrells from Churchland High School, Alex Venezia from Ocean Lakes High School, and Phillip Bariteau from Maury High School.

49 years ago CBAA member and popular local artist John B. Tenney donated a painting to be raffled off for a Art Scholarship. After his death the scholarship fund was renamed the John B. Tenney Memorial Art Scholarship. CBAA holds several fund raising events every year to raise money for the fund. The largest of these is the Ocean View Art Show, which will be celebrating it’s 50th year this October.

The 4 Scholarships will be awarded at CBAA’s annual Spring Show reception, held May 17th, 2012, at Old Dominion Universities’ Innovation Place Building #1. The Spring Show features a variety of work by CBAA members and will be on display in Innovation Place Buildings #1 & 2 until mid June this year. Work from the Scholarship winners and entrants will also be on display. The Scholarships are awarded to High School students who have been accepted into college, with an Art Major. This year over 25 students applied and 4 were selected for scholarship awards.

Chesapeake Bay Art Association was formed in 1961 when several artists living in the Willoughby Bay section of Norfolk got together and decided they needed to work together to promote Art in Norfolk. The following year their first outdoor show was held in the Ocean View area. This show is still going strong and is one of the oldest and largest Artist run shows in Virginia. Artists from all over the mid-Atlantic area will bring their displays to Norfolk on October 13 & 14, 2012. Thousands of local art lovers will descend on Ocean View Beach Park that weekend to enjoy the fun, family, atmosphere of the show.
