Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals

Well, my friends asked me to go to Jamaica to celebrate a big birthday but it sounded like it would be too much fun so I declined. So I have no plans. Anybody have any suggestions?

A LOT of you will be in Florida at Fort Myers, Hobe Sound and Stuart. Where else will you be?

Hi.  We are considering doing some Florida shows in March.  Any advice by anyone.  We do contemporary work and thought we would hook up with the Howard Alan shows?  Any insigts appreciated.  Thanks, Robert

Search "Howard Alan" in the Search window (leaving off the quote marks) and you'll get plenty of input on his shows, in general.
Howard accepts late applications so it's worth a shot.  Note that (if I'm remembering the policy correctly) you'll pay a $50 late application fee for any shows that you apply to within 30 days of Day 1.

If you're applying through Zapp, make sure you read his show policies carefully before you apply.  He's got more rules than many promoters do.

Here's a little news about Fort Myers this weekend -- seems the monthly Art Walk in the downtown is not happy with the Artfest: http://www.islandsunnews.com/FortMyers/020712.html

Not exactly what you wanted to hear, but -- I may be trying to figure out how to sell my tent this weekend.  Yup, the lovely one I bought brand new from Flourish in early 2010 and used for 2 summers - less than 15 fairs all told.  I sit here recovering from my December 14th torn rotator cuff surgery and finally accept that I can never again set the tent up by myself, or even with one helper.  {Cutting out all the boring details.}  So why hang onto the all but brand new tent as it ages?  The black linen walls to go over the mesh hanging walls are less than a year old.  Boy.  There's just so much "stuff" that goes with it.  What was the focus of my life for 2 years is over.  Now I have to find other  avenues for selling my art.  But honestly?  Boy did I hate doing art fairs.  I was probably as ill equipped as a person could be to do those things.  Absolute agony.  I loved being surrounded by artists, and most shows came to know some lovely people who'd watch my tent for me and who I got to swap art with - that I'll miss.  Can't imagine going to an art fair and having to pay for art, who can afford that?  I'll gladly trade an etching for a vase/bracelet/photograph, but cash?  I became an avid pen&ink doodler as I couldn't do printmaking in the tent and I needed some activity to keep myself sane.  I have shown some of these doodles in shows to much amusement.

Less you think I give up too easily, I also had serious heat stroke and a multitude of other injuries last summer which forced me to back out of half the fairs I was signed up for.

Anyway - any good suggestions on how to go about selling the tent?  I'm in Michigan, wouldn't want to have to package it for shipping, that could get costly.

Sara, let me know when you put a price on it, and I will put the word out in my area. I know a few newbies who might be in the market for a good lightly used tent.

And if you REALLY want to hang out at an art fair once in a while, take the drive down to the Leeper Park fair in South bend on Father's Day weekend. I'd love to have you as my guest!

I can help you sell your tent, Sara, at this site. Get in touch with me when you are ready.

I saw your ArtPrize piece and had a really good laugh -- something to hang in the Art Fair Archives -- and tells the story of many artists, pretty universal feelings portrayed.

Hope you are feeling much better, Sara, and I know you are relieved to not be dreading the summer with its art fair demands, physical and emotional. Best wishes.

If the weather is decent I might go hike Coyote Wall, on the WA side of the Columbia River Gorge, with some friends on Sunday.

That's a good choice, Lisa. Hope you get to do it.

I'll be sitting the gallery for this show on Saturday!  We're open every weekend from 12Noon to 5pm.

Many of us will be in Mount Dora.

OMG! That was totally off my radar. A very big show with lots of good work, hope the folks enjoy (and buy) your photos, R.C.
