Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals
New to the business - where to apply in Michigan?
A recent email I received told me of someone starting art fairs this year, living in West Michigan, and wondering what art fairs they should apply for. Here are some suggestions:
1. Birmingham Fine Art Fair - Mid May
2. Fine Art at the Village, Rochester - Mid May
3. East Lansing Art Festival - Mid May
4. Kalamazoo - first weekend of June
5. Reed's Lake, Grand Rapids - June 20
6. Elk Rapids - June 26
7. Harbor Springs - July 7
8. Royal Oak - mid July
9. Krasl Art Fair, St. Joe - mid July
10. Ann Arbor - mid July
11. Charlevoix - 2nd Saturday of August
12. Suttons Bay - 1st weekend of August
13. Chesterton, IN - 1st weekend of August
14. Ferndale - mid September
15. Fallasburg Festival in Lowell - late September

Fourth of July - South Haven and Saugatuck, back to back one day shows only 20 minutes apart. Holland and Muskegon also have shows that weekend.

Those are good choices, Larry. Plus, they wouldn't be expensive to do.
Just remembered another - Leeper Park in South Bend - late June.

Petoskey, I believe is the 3rd Saturday in July. Only a one day event but very nice setting.
Charlevoix, 2nd week in October. This is a 3 day event. Last year it was cold so plan for a heater!

Yes, I'd imagine it would be taking a chance going to Charlevoix in October. What three day event is this?

Could be fabulous -- but I'm thinking in the summer it is the summer people who are buying -- do local people have any money?
I know about these very cool portable heaters --- think we got ours at a feed store, definitely part of the art fair equipment inventory.

Great ideas all - over the 4th I'll be at a convention in Dearborn which has a 2-day Marketplace - their equivalent of an indoor art/craft fair where I can 'buy' a table for either 1 or 2 days. Last year did 1 day and didn't make a lot of money, plane fare - it was in Pittsburgh - so thought I'd try both days this year. But it means I'm missing out on a lot of fairs - I'd love to do Muskegon as I have a lot of friends there. Maybe next year, when my convention is in Portland, OR and I won't be able to afford to send boxes of art all that way.

I'm new at this too and have just received my acceptance at the South Haven Art Fair on July 4. I hope I made a good choice. I visited it last year and there were gobs of people around but I don't know if they were buying or not. Can anyone give me some feedback on the show as to what I can expect? Thanks!

South Haven can be an exceptional show. Make sure to ask for a space you can park your van behind and get there very early (while it's dark) because the parking spaces behind the booths go fast. Also, if it's not too late make sure to apply to Saugatuck for the day before. They are only about a half hour apart and make a great combination.

Larry, I appreciate the tips on parking very much and relieved to know the show should be a good one. I'm finding Insiders to be so valuable a site for help and info like this!! I'm headed to Syracuse, IN for a small show on the 3rd. Lots of vacationers there as well! Thanks!
