Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals
I am a director for the Space Coast Art Show which is held Thanksgiving Weekend in Cocoa Beach ,FL. We are juried and Give up to Fifty Thousand dollare in awards.
We are considering going to either ZAP or JAS. Can any one give me any input concernng either of these services. I do placement of the artists and have a concern for the time frame that has been suggested.

You should contact ZAPP if that's what you're considering. They have a lower rate for shows that get under 500 applications.
The advantage of using ZAPP is that it's standardized between shows plus the artists maintain an image bank and choose which images they want to submit with each application. Once the images are uploaded and labeled, an application takes about two minutes. Entrythingy does not offer artists an image bank so each application requires images to be uploaded, with different naming conventions for each show though most want lastname_firstname_image#.jpg. JAS, once everything is labeled, is almost as fast as ZAPP to apply to a show. A few advantages if you use JAS. Artists see their images in the application EXACTLY as the jurors see them, unlike ZAPP which shows you the images on a white background but the jurors see them on black. Another advantage of using JAS is that you can pick up the phone and speak to the people who own the system, and they will tweak it for your specific needs.
Some of what I posted is from an artist point of view in that they prefer to use ZAPP because it's easy. Shows like using ZAPP because ZAPP promotes the shows even if the application isn't open, by having the shows always listed on the web site with their information being available. Artists look for shows to apply to on the ZAPP web site, unlike with JAS and Entrythingy. JAS only lists shows while they are taking applications. Entrythingy justs has a list of shows using their system, promoting the system, not the shows. I feel that by spending a little more to use ZAPP, you have the potential to get it back in increased applications.
For any system you choose, you can point artists to my http://BermanGraphics.com web site if they need help. I even have a web site that formats images for ZAPP or JAS at no charge, http://JuryImages.com

Permalink Reply by Chris Ritke on February 21, 2012 at 8:14pm Hi Chickie - I'd like to correct/add to a few of Larry's statements about EntryThingy.
1. Yes, EntryThingy does not have an image bank, but artists can very easily reuse images uploaded to other shows, without having to upload again. We have more than 30,000 artist profiles - once an artist has registered with one show and filled out their profile information (name, address, phone number, web site, statement, resume etc) they don't do it again - they just login, upload or reuse their existing images, submit, pay and they're done.
2. EntryThingy has no requirements for the file names - very few shows ask for specific file name formats because of requirements from their old entry processes.
3. In EntryThingy it's very easy for artists to view their images exactly as the jurors see them - before they submit their entry. They can also easily sort their images for the jury view. They can also print out their entry for future reference.
4. EntryThingy has a list of all current shows here: http://www.entrythingy.com/artists - artists visit this page to find shows. There's also the ability for artists to easily review their entries across all shows using EntryThingy.
5. An advantage of EntryThingy is that it lives on your site and takes on the look and feel of your site - so artists stay within the experience of your organization's web site.
6. Pick up the phone and call 415 670 9090 to speak with the people who run EntryThingy. We're available 7 days a week and we'll be more than happy to help you with any tweaks - and customize the entry process to almost any requirements.

Permalink Reply by John Hartung on February 23, 2012 at 11:59am I'm so happy you are moving to one of these digital jury systems. I have used all three and have no strong opinion of one over another, but will point out Zapplication is the most popular. I also hope while doing so you will no longer require the booth fee up front. The reason I stopped applying to your otherwise fine art show is having my booth fee deposited before being accepted or rejected to the art show. Moving to a digital jury system and foregoing the booth fee at the time of application should increase your number of applications and benefit your show as well as the artists. Good luck in the transition!
Permalink Reply by Alison Thomas on February 24, 2012 at 6:22am I am another artist who did not apply to your show because of the booth fee up front and cashed. Change that policy and no matter what process you use I can almost guarantee you will get more applications.
Permalink Reply by Robin Ragsdale on February 23, 2012 at 12:03pm I've never used JAS, but find Zap a good service. I also like Entry Thingy. From an artist's viewpoint, Zap is much easier than Entry Thingy for finding shows. Entry Thingy doesn't allow sorting by date, location, etc. I don't travel far for shows, so Zap's sorting features really help me.

Permalink Reply by Lisa Foster on February 23, 2012 at 1:07pm I agree with this. I like entry thingy's Jury View and the ability to enter more information, such as a resume or artist statement and it somehow seems more personal. However, I find it frustrating to not be able to search by location (unless I'm missing something). In entry thingy I'm just presented with a list of shows, most of which I don't even know where they're at unless the location is in the title.
Permalink Reply by Chris Ritke on February 23, 2012 at 1:24pm Hi Lisa and Robin - The call listing ( http://www.entrythingy.com/artists ) now shows the name of the organization and location - we just added that recently. And yes, you're right - we have to do something about sorting/searching by location and also by show date. It's at the top of the todo list!
