Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals

I missed a couple of Illinois tollway stops.....one for $1.50 (6/5/11)and another for $.50 (6/3\11).....so as per the rules, I  sent in $2.00 (6/6\11) with complete documentation within 7 days which is allowed by the rules.....three weeks later they sent me a photo of my car and said they did not get the money and that I now owed $67.00.....I called and told them I had paid , but they did not believe it, so per their instructions and then sent them a photo copy of the $2.00 payment.....now they called again and said they got the $2.00 photo copy proof and the actual check....but can only apply it to either the $1.50 missed toll or the $.50 missed toll....not both......so I now have to pay a $21.00 fine.

Any suggestions on how to deal with the Illinois Tollway?

Gee.....yet another reason to not do art shows in Illinois......we are not all good here in Wisconsin.....but if a public agency did this in Wisconsin....the public would be outraged......and people in such an agency who made this policy would be fired or at least redirected ....and the people would demand that the politicians discipline such  agency policy makers.....I know......I worked as a department head for a county agency in Wisconsin for 22 years.

How does one miss a toll way stop or toll booth? Doesn't the gate go up after you pay? You may need to explain if it works differently.

In PA I use the EZPass which is good all the way up to Maine and I found out last week that Ohio is now using it also.

Well it doesnt matter how I missed the toll booths......the fact is I paid with in the 7 days allowed by the rules.......actually my GPS (Tom Tom) told me to keep left.....and I was too far away from the coin lanes on the right.....to make it over there safely......I believe in safety first.....I am not an expert in Chicago driving....and prob will not be driving there in the future.....unless I join the Illinois Tollway pirate crew.

Larry, in Illinois it's called "open road tolling," and is for transponder users only: no gate, except in the manual cash lanes.

I can now use my Illinois I Pass in IL, IN, and OH. Haven't tried it beyond there.

It's good in at least PA and NY as well.

Larry, a couple of years ago I was going to Chicago and due to construction, missed the toll booth by being in the "EZPass" lane instead of the $$ lane.  EZ to do, the construction was very confusing!

David, it sounds like you've had a bad run of luck lately.  Silly rules.

I had a similar experience with Illinois sales tax. One year they changed periods (or accounting systems, or something) half way through the year. Said to pay each one separately, Jan-June, then July-Dec. On one I owed something like $61.50, on the other $59.50. I sent each one stapled to the correct set of forms. They applied each payment to the wrong period, then sent me a bill for $2 and a whopping penalty fee (like $40) for “failing” to pay one of the bills. I could not get it straightened out. I made numerous phone calls, they admitted that they saw how it happened;  it was their mistake, that someone had mixed them up, but nothing could be done.  It was “in the system” and no one had the authority to correct it. Their best suggestion was that I should never send them two checks at the same time ever again.

The way I read this, is that payments should never be combined, and also never sent together.

I had the same problem with Bank America Master Card. I pay my wife's and my card in the same envelope to save stamps, stapling the check to the corresponding invoice. One month I received a late notice for one account and called them. It seems that they applied the top payment to the invoice and threw the rest away. They credited me back the late fee and now I staple both payments and invoices together forcing them to take the staples out and match the checks to the invoices.

So this is why I personally pay all bills online and never mail anything if I can avoid it.  Much better electronic trail of when my bank transmitted the payment and when they should have received it.

But even when they admitted they had my money($2.00), they still said I had to send two checks (one for $1.50 and one for $.50).instead of one for $2.00.....they want one check for each of two violations..and they applied my $2.00 check to only the $1.50 violaton....so in their minds the $.50 violation was unpaid........probably this method of doing things is buried deep inside their self- serving, less-work-for-them rules....but who would know such a rule exists  or even check to see that such a rule exists....
I know: it's just crazy! And even with electronic payment, there's no guarantee they wouldn't apply the payment to the wrong invoice. It seems like they are trying to avoid thinking or observing.  God forbid a state worker in these financial offices should think?! And it's obvious, they are avoiding it very well indeed.
State workers   do.....not.......care.     What's gonna happen? Are they gonna get FIRED??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Chris....I agree...they wont get fired.....we can only dream that might happen.....lol
