Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals

We all know there's a storm coming up the east coast this weekend (8-27 & 28).  Is anyone doing any shows in the storm's path? And what are your plans?

Thankfully, we have this weekend off as the storm may be heading for New England. I was just listening to the radio and there may be mandatory evacuations in some areas on Long Island and costal Connecticut.

I'm not doing any shows this weekend but I would hope that any organizers of shows coming up would have a real close eye on the weather.  This is one instance where a cancellation would truly be in order.  As a former resident of Florida I've been through 3 tropical storms and 3 hurricanes.  Even the tropical storms which tend to be just a whole lot of rain, would be miserable to do an art show in.

I was considering picking up a last minute local show at a winery on the north fork of Long Island, but changed my mind after the weather report.

Like Allison, I hope promoters use common sense.

I'm waiting to hear from Lazy Daze in Cary, NC.  I did receive an e-mail that they are "reviewing the weather situation" and would let us know by this afternoon the status of the event.  They did make it clear that it is a rain or shine event (and one year was held in the POURING rain).  I'm thinking if it's canceled they will have to refund and probably can't afford to do that so will reschedule or carry on.

I received an e-mail AND a personal phone call from the folks in Cary.  The event has been canceled for the first time in its 35-year history.  Booth fees are being refunded.  It was not practical to reschedule.

I'm sure this was a difficult decision for these folks as it is a major fundraiser for this community.  As with other aspects of the event, these folks are as thoughtful and considerate as they come, and kudos to them for their respect for artists and attendees.  What a great bunch of folks!

We were scheduled to participate in the Seawall Art Show....right in the exact path of Irene. We barely survived a microburst/tornado in Asheville in June--I knew that I wouldn't be able to go through it again (my booth, and another HUGE product loss) if we would be required to participate. Thankfully, Martha Francis cancelled all participation. We are still contemplating visiting our galleries up there.....depending on Irene......

As a resident of the Fl Keys everyone really needs to pay attention here. This is a HUGE storm. We are very thankful this stayed East of us. I have been in the 2 big NC storms-Hugo(yes this hit the Charlotte area hard after hitting Charleston SC) and Floyd as well as 4 Fl Keys storm in 2005-Dennis, Katrina, Rita, and Wilma-with severe flooding of over 6 feet. This is no light matter. As hurricane Charley did in 2004 catching Punta Gorda off guard-it could take a sharp turn any where in its pathway. All the East Coast needs to be prepared and paying attention. I would not travel any where near the projected pathway. The local residents will have their hands full this weekend. I pray all East coast residents and visitors stay safe this weekend. Please evacuate areas when suggested.

I watched a number of Governors finally say smart things.  They're telling residents of outlying areas that if they are told to evacuate, and do not, they are on their own. Nobody's going to risk their lives to go get you.

Personal responsibility is finally making a comeback.
