Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals

This may or not be a good sign of things looking up, but I thought I'd pass it along anyway - This weekend the Virginia Beach Convention Center is holding a 3 day Home and Garden Show.  They set up a display in the lobby for local artists to display Garden oriented art work.  27 artists have up to 3 pieces in the show, plus notecards and prints.  Usually at this show, the cards and prints are the big items.  After all the people are coming to a Home and Garden show, not an Art Show.  So far this weekend, the big sellers have been large originals.  Yesterday was a snowy, rainy, day, and several big pieces were sold.  The cards and prints have been selling OK, but the big ticket items were moving equally well.

I'm not sure if that's a sign that the Art World is recovering slightly, or just a random good day, but I thought I'd pass it along anyway!

This is great news. If anything it is great news for you - your work is desirable. I did a home and garden show last year and it was not good for me, but there are several who do well. Granted I did better than many, however didn't make a profit (and it helped the event was 40 mins. away - low expenses). What I am finding though is there are people who hear the words "art show" or "craft fair" and have this stereotype that it is for the "rich" or only certain types of "junk" is there. When you sell at a Home and Garden show, wine festival, etc. there are more people who will come up to you and say I never thought of "this" as a craft or art - and gush over how they thought "this" stuff is usually too expensive, too funky for their tastes, and so on, but quickly learn art fairs offer a lot more than what they originally think. Sorry to go off topic, but I have to say it is nice to hear your review regarding your experience at the H&G show you are selling at. - Michelle
