  • I know that for my shows, I give us a week to jury in the initial dates, but if the jury actually falls later in the week or gets pushed back more, I will extend the deadline until then.  As long as I have enough time to do all the administrative stuff (which can be done at midnight the day before) then the date can be as close to the actual jury as I like.
  • Indeed; past blogs have much info-- Big $$$$$ play a large role-- I stayed out of the quality apps blog- It is up to the promoter //organization to promote an event that attracts quality artists and customers//if it is not happening  then work harder, and maybe make alittle less (artists sure take a major gamble at each event)(great shows do not guarantee success for anyone) // throw that carrott out there; either in sales or prize money, but the quality artists need to be attracted to have successful art festivals. Bonita,Winter Park , Cherry Creek( to name but a few) no problem with apps or quality -NOR EXTENDED DEADLINES- but Gasparilla (largest $$$ prizes at any fl show) --extension for $$$$$-  it is up to each show and we are HELPLESS- for now till we figure something out  or get made as hell-  Is the fire being fanned yet???   Fair Winds
    • I did a show in AZ a few years ago, and yes they were with zapp.  They were calling artists that had not applied to see if they were going to do the show.  I have heard thru the grapevine that they were having a hard time filling the show.  Times are tough in AZ.  If one can not even make his or her booth fee why bother returning.  A year ago i did not apply to this show cause the year before i did not make my booth fee.  I think this particular show depends on snowbirds and if they are not coming with this economy that hurts a show.  And yes i still think it is money
  • Hi Pam,

This has been discussed many times on this and other art show forums. Basically, we as artists don't know the exact reason and can only speculate. Artists tend to think it's about shows getting more jury fees, but there may be other reasons to consider, like not enough applications or the simple fact that they can extend the deadline. Shows that project the images have a specific cut off date in order to get the images burned onto DVD's and get the projection equipment from ZAPP. That means if they do extend the deadline, it's only for a day or so. Shows that use monitors for jurying are another issue all together. They only need access to the images on the ZAPP server and there's no reason for them not to take in applications right up until the minute they start jurying, which I guess they are figuring out because they are extending the deadlines.

    • The Harrisburg Memorial Weekend Festival is one that had January 5 or so deadline, on ZAPP, now extened to Jan 21.....I am jury exempt..was just curious to know what was going on with seeing a number of shows "extend" deadlines.

Over the years, it has been a challenge to make sure deadlines were met and now you can wonder if it is a real deadline or not....

      • Robert joined AFI the other day. Maybe if he know this thread was about his show, he might answer. I'll send him an e-mail tonight asking him to participate.

Being their first year with ZAPP, maybe they didn't get enough applications by the first closing date.

        • Our deadline was extended because of our change of policy. Many of our artists were not ZAPP users. This was our first year utilizing ZAPP...which we are very happy with.
          • thanks for the info/update...first time using any of the on line services can be intimidating and somewhat confusing.
            • Holly... we did indeed go with ZAPP this year rather than our normal printed application which caused alot of confusion for past exhibitors. Many were claiming they were waiting to receive the hard copy. In regard to your worry about the gate.... this was done after set up so there were not any changes, we still had the usual amount of volunteers to assist the artists and the usual benefits of the show. Most artists were happy with the decision. We hope you return as we have many that ask for you.
