What are the best things about art fairs

listening to comments about your work which, in many cases, can help you to move forward, and of course, meet people from all over the world. Santa Barbara is a major tourist magnet and I've sold to people from at least 20 countries probably led buy the UK and Germany. Our show is in its 44th year,,,and every Sunday.

Best show ever and why

Hard to define...mostly all good. If sales are slow its still ok..get to sit under the Palm Trees with the Pacific Ocean at my back and enjoying the almost always great weatherI they're

Worst show ever and why

Just the very few Sundays of rain or wind

Who referred you to ArtFairInsiders.com? Please be specific.

Because some idiot employed by the City Of Santa Barbara had the sprinklers go off around 1pm, right in the middle of the art show.

  • Hey, Chuck,
Thanks for contacting me. I am a total newbie to the Fair scene (never done one). I have been considering applying to the Cabrillo fair when I'm ready with my line of art products.
Previously, I have been a textile designer for 20 years. ... (see my website) ... www.akwstudio.com ..... biz was great until last year; now clothing manufacturers are not buying much from print studios, so I've decided to create my own products to sell- I'm just getting it all together now. I'm doing block prints of mostly dog related subject matter: hand -printing greeting cards, Tshirts, sweashirts, etc.
I am working on a website store, but I need to get the art out into the public first...so far I've only shown our friends at sheepherding trials (my husband and I work border collies).. great sales/ feedback so far, but SB Art Fair rules seem like they would not allow my prints or t-shirts. I'm working on a related series of fine art original collage/paintings that tie in; cuz it seems they allow prints if it is only a portion of the work ??? Yet they allow "Graphic Art" ??
Anyway, I'm creating/ researching/ planning like crazy and need all the info./encouragement I can get !!
    Thanks !!

PS..what does "all hat no cattle" mean ? We are "all dog, no sheep" !
  • Hello Chuck:

  • Hi Chuck, thanks for your comments and apologies for a somewhat delayed response! Brighton has a pretty good art market and London is conveniently close, being only 55 miles up the road. It's interesting that you mention Islington, Islington's population consists of many media types and I regularly have a stand at Islington Contemporary Art And Design Fair at Candid Galleries which is a great venue with a good list of clients. Are there any Art Fairs that you paricularly recommend in your neck of the woods?
  • Funny you should mention that. I'm looking out the window, the sun is starting to shine--should I head off to the East Lansing art fair today? or wait until tomorrow?

My kids live in LA, so I get to see a fair amount of West Coast. Never have seen a good art fair though. But then my kids tell me when I suggest attending, say La Quinta, that they've seen enough art fairs. Imagine.
  • Thanks for being here, Chuck, and for your posts.

You folks on the West Coast do have a fabulous place to do art fairs outdoors. Here in the Midwest we are always fighting the weather. Here it is mid-May, blowing and rainy on a Saturday, should be a good art fair day. Oh, well. We are used to it.
  • Hi Chuck, thanks and much appreciated! You're welcome to exhibit down here? And one day, I may exhibit up there myself! I have afew clients in California. In fact my first painting sold to a lawyer in San Diego just 4 yrs ago.
it's been raining heavy here for the last 24hrs, (most unusual), and it may clear tomorrow?
Here's a link to some webcams - check it out on a fine day, (Time here 6.10pm on Saturday).... www.skyline.co.nz
  • Can you email me small images of an example of your work to becky@intothewestphotos.com ?
  • I am not very adept at this sight, how can I see your work or website? Becky
  • Thanks Chuck, It is interesting the number of people that come into my booth and say "I can do that in photoshop!" I enjoy putting paint on the image and changing it into my vision. Most of my work is Colorado and the ghost towns etc.
  • I really appreciate your willingness to answer questions! We have produced bridal shows twice a year for 15 years, but this is certainly a different animal. I think learning the vendors and their likes and dislikes for a good show are my main objectives right now. I've been looking around at other show booth costs. I think $250 for a 10x10 for a 3-day show with 8,000 attendees is low. What do you think?
