First show ever
As a freshman art student, I had two pieces in a printmaking show on campus. Outrageously excited, I "casually" hovered around my work like a poorly trained spy, eavesdropping on every conversation. I overheard a professor murmur "Very nice," and just about exploded! Sleep came slowly that night as I lay and imagined my golden and rapidly approaching future as a world famous artist.
What are the best things about art fairs
Getting to meet new people! Of course, selling work is always nice, but my favorite part is talking to customers and fellow artisans and hearing their stories. I always come away with new ideas!
Best show ever and why
My very first "Endpapers" show was a smashing success! I sold 35 out of 40 originals, and had over 200 orders for reproductions--very encouraging for a brand new art major. My favorite comment in the guestbook was "Thanks for giving me something beautiful to look at in the night. --The Janitor."
Worst show ever and why
I nearly killed myself trying to get ready for a last-minute show where I was listed as the "featured artist." It was being held at a large restaurant with wine tasting, etc., and I had to drive several hours to get there. When I finally arrived, hot and flustered after getting lost in my airless car, I saw that my "featured" area was a tiny waiting lounge that no customers walked through, where I was shoved in amongst the tables and chairs. Fortunately, the staff loved my work and bought enough pieces to cover the cost of me getting there, with $40 to spare! Pleased and exhausted, I packed up my stuff and took it out to my car, considering blowing the profit I'd made on a nice dinner somewhere before the long drive home. That's when I saw the little white paper fluttering on my dash--a $39.95 parking ticket!
