Years in the Art Fair Business
22 (although I've only participated in a handful)
First show ever
Mid 60's - Fontana, WS - Memories as a child of art in a park by shoreline of Lake Geneva. Magical. An artist took the time to show this "budding artist" how to draw a realistic tree. I still use his technique.
What are the best things about art fairs
Meeting fellow artists & getting to understand how their art developed. I love talking to the customers, even if they don't buy. When they respond to a piece, have a personal connection - that is incredibly rewarding.
Best show ever and why
Just a little ole Grand Rapids, MI show: Fine Art on the Grand. It only existed for 2 years due to city regulation changes. But the location, right on the Grand River was so wonderful. It was small enough to be managable, restricted enough to keep the art quality high & decent fees. Good attendance, too. Shame it didn't continue.
Worst show ever and why
As a customer: a Cheboygan, MI show about 5 years ago. A whole-in-the-hall convention center with crappy "art" that looked like it was mostly made from reject arts & craft kits. Stuck in the very back where a couple of half-way decent fine artists who looked like deer in the headlights. And they charged a admission fee (small but still...)
