What are the best things about art fairs

The People

Best show ever and why

Art Under the Oaks at San Pedro Catholic Church. It was organized and brought in a large crowd.

Worst show ever and why

Big Pine Nautical Flea Market. It was not an art show but more of Flea Market. Not a bad show if your selling boat parts. It just wasn't the crowd for artwork

What is one fun fact about yourself?

I was born and raised in Key West, Florida. My family came over from the Bahamas several generations ago. I have always been drawn to the ocean; I can only describe it as a sense of belonging. I grew up with a spear-gun in hand during the summer and transitioned to a yo-yo (hand-line) in the winter. Only because the 70 degree water was too cold. My family has always been tied to the commercial fishing industry of the Florida Keys. My Grandfather and Great Grandfather built most of the wooden hull fishing boats originating in Key West towards the end of the wooden hull era. Eventually the industry led them to create a fiberglass mold called the PME 53'. This boat is used my most of the larger commercial lobster fisherman in the Florida Keys. My family operated the commercial fishing vessel the “Surprise” for many years. This vessel is pictured below and is an example of my families PM 53' design. I went in a similar direction with my life. I am currently a Lieutenant employed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. I captain the 57' “Peter Gladding” which frequents the Dry Tortugas on multi-day patrols. The best part of my job is stopping to inspect the catches of the local fishing boats and getting to hear their stories about the "good ole days". The next best thing is the feeling of accomplishment when stopping a poacher that has disrespected the true nature of what it means to be a fisherman. My job and love of the ocean constantly inspires my artwork. While studying at Florida International University, pursuing my career with FWC, I began to take my artistic abilities seriously. I quickly found that the use of permanent markers and ball point pens would be my chosen medium and the waters of the Florida Keys would be my inspiration. With the encouragement of my family and the support from my wife, Tiffini, I began to sell my artwork in the early months of 2014. My works can be seen at www.petersrenditions.com and on my Facebook Page: Peters Renditions.
