I was invited to the Toledo Zoo's Wild About Art show and another show in Chardon, Ohio on the same weekend.  I know what the Chardon show is all about, but wondered if anyone has had any experience…Continue

Up to now, I have painted mostly in watercolors and in a more "realistic" style.  But recently I have been experimenting with a more abstract style in acrylics, painting similar subject matter, but…Continue

Sonja Jones commented on Nels johnson's blog post Woodland Park Art Festival, Lexington, KY.—Hot temps with hot Lowend sales
"Nels, do you think this is the trend everywhere?  I am rather new to showing, but at the seven or so shows I've done, this seems to be the dominant buying pattern.  Only at Boston Mills show in Penisula, OH did I see more expensive…"

Sonja Jones replied to Matt Gwinn's discussion What's the worst comment you've ever received at a show?
"A woman viewing my artwork at a recent show turned to her companion and said, “sure, it’s cute as all get go, but really, who would hang that in their house.” What?!! My display was watercolors, and most were birds done in a…"

Sonja Jones replied to Rick Wallace's discussion How much is too much inventory
"I haven't done many more shows than you, but that does seem like an awful lot of inventory to bring.  Visually, I think it looks nicer to not have every square inch of your tent walls filled - the better shows want you to go for a gallery…"

Chardon Square Arts Festival - Aug. 4, 2019

I'm relatively new to showing, and had the opportunity to do either the Chardon Square Arts Festival in Chardon, OH or the Toledo Zoo Art Fair.  After posing the question of which to choose on our discussion board, I received a couple of hearty recommendations to do the Chardon Art Festival and run from the Toledo Zoo one!The application process for the show seemed a little old fashioned to me.  You mail in a paper application and have to send in actual photos of your work and booth shot, along…See More

Sonja Jones replied to Sonja Jones's discussion Has anyone had experience with the Toledo Zoo "Wild About Art" show?

First show ever
Gingerbread House Art and Craft Show was my first show of any kind. My first real art show, though, was Boston Mills.

What are the best things about art fairs
Validation of my artwork.
Best show ever and why
Boston Mills was my best show to date, but I am just getting started. But this show was the largest venue I've showed in to date, and I was able to make a profit despite lousy weather.
Worst show ever and why
The Chagrin Falls Avant-garde show was my worst. The booth fee was high for me at the time, and I didn't sell a single item. Bad weather kept the crowd size down, but I don't know if I would've done better even so.

St. Louis Art Fair Mock Jury 2018

Posted on February 5, 2018 at 2:03pm 4 Comments

Hi All!

I recently participated in the St. Louis Mock Jury this past January.  Even though I was unable to attend in person, I participated through their webinar.  As a newbie, I found quite a few take-aways from this experience. Even though I didn't really have a booth shot to submit, the biggest tips for me were on my future booth shots.  Don't overcrowd your booth with too much artwork, make your displays look professional and inviting, don't have any signage or promotional banners…
