Larry Berman replied to Sonja Jones's discussion What's the rudest comments you've had towards your art?
"Easiest way to start is set up your canopy on an overcast day and shoot the paintings underneath. You can use a color checker if you know how to use one in Photoshop. A gray card will do the same thing because the only usable squares on a color…"

Larry Berman replied to Sonja Jones's discussion What's the rudest comments you've had towards your art?

What's the rudest comments you've had towards your art?

While photographing one of my paintings, I was having difficulty getting the true colors to come out.  So I posted my photo of the artwork to a photography forum, asking for suggestions on how to correct for this.  To my surprise, the very first response was from someone who wrote "May I be frank?  That painting is horrible!"  Um, ok.  But I didn't ask you to critique my artwork, I asked for help in correcting the colors in the photo.  So I just responded that "that was fine, we all have…See More

Sonja Jones replied to tricia d sutton's discussion selling art prints with no mat and what tape to use?
"I second that suggestion!  I have been matting my reproduction prints this way, and it works very well.  I also have matting in various colors, and if a customer prefers a different color, it's nothing to swap out the matting of one…"

Sonja Jones replied to Dan McCarthy's discussion Artist statement displayed in booth?
"I think a little bio article helps sell.  People buying art really want there to be some story behind it.  I have customers ask me all the time what my inspiration was for a particular piece, or how I came to be an artist.  Even with…"

Sonja Jones replied to James Wales's discussion Artist inside or outside their booth?
"Love this approach, Larry!  I don’t have a great display yet - just an EZ up with three simple mesh walls - but I try to position my level 5 “wow” pieces on the the back wall.  I don’t want to be sitting back there…"

Sonja Jones replied to James Wales's discussion Artist inside or outside their booth?
"James, I took some advice from a more veteran artist and got a tall director's chair that I set right at the front corner of my booth.  That way, I can be present to greet people and engage them, but I'm not blocking them from viewing…"

First show ever
Gingerbread House Art and Craft Show was my first show of any kind. My first real art show, though, was Boston Mills.

What are the best things about art fairs
Validation of my artwork.
Best show ever and why
Boston Mills was my best show to date, but I am just getting started. But this show was the largest venue I've showed in to date, and I was able to make a profit despite lousy weather.
Worst show ever and why
The Chagrin Falls Avant-garde show was my worst. The booth fee was high for me at the time, and I didn't sell a single item. Bad weather kept the crowd size down, but I don't know if I would've done better even so.

St. Louis Art Fair Mock Jury 2018

Posted on February 5, 2018 at 2:03pm 4 Comments

Hi All!

I recently participated in the St. Louis Mock Jury this past January.  Even though I was unable to attend in person, I participated through their webinar.  As a newbie, I found quite a few take-aways from this experience. Even though I didn't really have a booth shot to submit, the biggest tips for me were on my future booth shots.  Don't overcrowd your booth with too much artwork, make your displays look professional and inviting, don't have any signage or promotional banners…
