Jury images for mixed media

I have been in the art show business for over 30 years in the category of jewelry. This year I decided to prepare a body of work that will be in the category of mixed media. I am spending this year producing the art and designing a new booth. So next year at shows I'll be the new guy all over again!   One of my many questions is this: when it comes to photographing the pieces for jury, should the image be the art only, or should it be photographed matted and framed? My mixed media collages…See More

Success in the Most Unlikely Place

Which show was it for you that looked like it would be disastrous, yet it turned into one of the best shows ever? For me it was the Lake Eustis Fine Art Show in Eustis Florida. I had taken a one year break from doing shows, and was ready to re-enter the arena. Living at the time in northern Florida, the intent was to find juried art shows within a 200 mile radius. This one looked promising, and was within 2 hours of home. I filled out the paperwork, got accepted, and packed my van.   The day…See More

What are the best things about art fairs
being able to show and sell my work for cold hard cash
Best show ever and why
Deland Fall Festival of the Arts- great show, well run, and I not only had great sales, but I won an award and made two large wholesale sales to a local boutique
Worst show ever and why
Save the Mayport Ferry Festival. It was not an art show, it was a few random vendors set up in a dirt field in intense heat one day, and heavy rain the next.

What do you do after season?

Posted on December 2, 2016 at 11:01pm 4 Comments

It took me a few long cold winters to get used to life in the Midwest, after living in Florida and doing the show circuit there for 25 years. In the south, shows start up in September and wind down in April, and by then it's too hot. In the north, it’s just the opposite: May to October, and after that it's too dang cold.

I know there are road gypsies out there that can pull off the year-round art show circuit, and I tip my hat to them. As for me and my house, I am glad to have my in…

The Making of a Show Piece

Posted on September 9, 2016 at 12:59pm 3 Comments

Somewhere along the line (right here on AFI!) I learned that jury images need to show a constistency. The pieces need to look like they are all from the same DNA, so to speak. Ever since hearing that, I have had a concern that my jury images are too dissimilar, and that someday I should make them more cohesive.

So this month, “someday” arrived. I designed and built new statement pieces that are similar to another jury image. In the process of designing, I…

Fish Bowl vs. Privacy and why do we shows

"The thing I remember best about successful people I've met all through the years is their obvious delight in what they're doing......and it seems to have very little to do with worldly success. They just love what they’re doing, and they love it in front of other people" Fred Rogers

So why do you do shows? Is it about loving what…
