Art fair or full-blown festival?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Linda A Shields Jun 14, 2011. 3 Replies

On Sunday, as I made the rounds of all the artists at Art on the Lawn, I had some interesting conversations on the subject of art fairs and festivals that include other things. We all know that the…Continue

This is not strictly an art fair issue, but it concerns artists in general, especially in economically depressed cities such as the Midwestern one where I live.I'm an officer on the board of a local…Continue

Battery powered clip on lights for ProPanels??

I've scoured the Internet looking for a source for battery powered clip on lamps for ProPanels, and have had little luck. The Rockford Art Guild, of which I'm now president, has 20 knockdown…Continue

How NOT to get accepted into a show

I'm on a rant this morning. If this is you, please don't be offended, be educated. If it's not you, bless you, on behalf of all show directors. Every year, as the applications for the shows I direct…Continue

First show ever
In the late 1990s, I organized and directed several smaller shows. In 2000, the College of Medicine at Rockford hosted the first Art on the Lawn, a juried one-day show of fine arts and high end fine craft in various media. Now in our 14th year, the show is held on the grounds of Rockford College at 5050 East State Street in Rockford. I have directed the show since its inception. Always the second Sunday in June, the deadline to apply is usually mid-March.

What are the best things about art fairs
All the wonderful artists and beautiful art!
Best show ever and why
Why, Art on the Lawn 10th anniversary! Perfect weather, wonderful artists with a great mix of art and sales were very healthy.
Worst show ever and why
Rock Valley College arts and crafts fair...full of buy/sell, items in plastic marked "Made in China", even though the rules clearly forbid it. Didn't make a single sale, but the booth across from me selling $3 necklaces made a killing.
Who referred you to ArtFairInsiders.com? Please be specific.
An accident of fate.

There's a person behind the Art on the Lawn name

Hi, my name is Barbara Berney. I'm a digital collage artist, jewelry designer and art show director, arts advocate, graphic artist, editor and writer. I'm also the president of the Rockford Art Guild. My work is represented regionally in Illinois and Wisconsin by five galleries, and I still exhibit regularly.

I manage two annual regional shows in Rockford, Illinois. Art on the Lawn at Rockford College is held the second Sunday in June. The Rockford Artists Fair, now in it's 40th year, sponsored by the Rockford Art Guild is held the third weekend in September in beautiful Beattie Park downtown along the river.

I'm always interested in hearing from artists about what they like to have in a show and what they think makes a great show. I take my role as the show director seriously, and my goal is to make my shows the best they can be, kinda like the Army.

Send me a message or post a comment. I'd love to hear from you!

Hi Barbara,

I have actually been to Art on the Lawn. I lived in the Amana Colonies and Galena, Il for about 2 years. I had a small gallery in both places and did alot of shows in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, West Des Moines, Galena and Chicago. Have friends all over the area. I go back from time to time. Have a great day!
