Have you ever wondered what customers want when it comes to customerservice? Of course! Aside from the many questions artists have onthis subject, one of the most asked is “is it something I said ordid that prevented someone from buying from me?” I have somethoughts on this topic.

Question 14 What kind of service do customers want?

  1. Respect. Customers want to be treated with respect like a friend or familymember. Respect can easily be achieved through welcoming customerswarmly or recognizing them as a repeat customer and always lettingthem know you are available if they have any questions.

  1. Trust. Patrons don't want to feel like a criminal, they want to betrusted. Letting customers know you trust them – “Sure, Iaccept checks” or “Feel free to try this on, I trust you.”goes a long way. The worst thing a craft artist can do is hover, guard your booth like a gargoyle, or follow a person around thebooth pushing them into purchasing something.

  1. Be left alone. If you polled anyone what kind of customer service theylike, they'll most likely say – just leave me alone so I can shop.I say this each time I go into a shop at a mall. Before I put onefoot in the store I get accosted by 2-3 clerks asking, “Can I helpyou find something?” I recommend quick greeting those who walkinto your booth, and go about doing some simple chores letting themknow you are available to answer any questions when they are ready. This shows customers you trust them by giving him/her the power tocontrol the sale. This is very pleasing, don't you think? Also, don't interrupt customers while they are shopping they don't careand is a turn off to most. Only when a customer asks you a questionabout an item you make/sell, then is the time to win them overmentioning interesting facts about your work or testimonials (I justsold that very piece to a gal who loves the color blue too, let meshow you some other blue pieces I have over here...).

  1. Don't ignore me. A big turn off customers have is being ignored. Far toooften at shows I see craft artists chat with their neighbors orco-worker, chat on their cellphone, or take too much time talking toone customer and ignoring those who very well might be ready topurchase something. This is rude. A solution might includeinterrupting the current conversation (say “hold that thought –let me assist a customer and I'll be right back) or simply makingeye contact with those who come in your booth to show you see themand will be right with them.

  1. Be friendly. Customers are less likely to ask for help or buy from youopenly are having a bad day. Customers rarely buy from craft artistsif they over hear you complaining about a shows attendance or badsales as well as exhibiting negative body language (for instancesitting during, reading, or frowning or looking as though you areagitated say by a customer who rustled your feathers or whatever). One thing I learned back in my drama club days is “act” like youare having a good day even if you really aren't. Be kind and politeas well as jovial and enthusiastic about your work and being at theshow. People who are passionate about their work creates a positiveshopping environment which attracts even more customers.

Hopefully this helps to identify what customers want regarding customer serviceand how to achieve these results. Do you have a suggestion orexperience you want to share regarding this topic, do tell by using the comment button. Our next question will cover how GenX and Yr's affect how people shop especially at art and craft shows –this will be a fun topic! Happy Easter everyone!

Hopes for 2010

In 2009, I opened the Drake's Nest Studio, LLC in Ossineke, MI., a fiber art/photography studio. It is strictly by appointment and is a way for parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc., to "Make a Memory with" their child's art. I'm hoping that 2010 will find me doing more work in these areas and that my studio's renovations will be complete by that time.2010 will find me starting the year heading back to school for my Bachelor's Degree. 2009 found me working the Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival as a photographer as well as having my pictures of the 2009 Alpena Rodeo Kicker held at the Northern Lights Arena being put on their web site. I had pictures from the Lighthouse Festival published in the Alpena News as well as the Lighthouse Digest Magazine. Both of these events were a very humbling experience for me, as well as a wonderful learning experience. I am thankful for the people I met and the new friends I made.I hope 2010 will find me making my niche in the art world as a fiber artist and photographer. To all the wonderful artisans out there, Happy New Year and may 2010 find each and everyone of you enjoying all the very best life has to offer and doing that which brings you peace, love and happiness.Namaste - Terri at the Drake's Nest in snowy Ossineke, MI

I was a craft artist at the Seafood Festival this weekend. Here's some thoughts from my own personal experience as well as from neighbors and other craft friends. 1. I can't say it enough - It was HOOOTTT! 92+ degrees with 100% humidity. In order to do this fair you need a fan. Although it is set in a park right on the water, there isn't enough breeze to keep cool. Hot, Humid, and Haze with not much wind makes for a miserable experience. During pack up, just like last year there was a major thunderstorm - I survived it! And to be honest - the rain felt soooo good. Nothing got damaged. 2. Security was an issue. I am one of the lucky ones not affected by some early visitors who went on a shop lifting spree. The way I was told is the two adults (parents) would distract the artist and the kids would steal the products. Jewelry artists got hit harder, but it was 1-2 things from each booth - a total of about 10 booths I think were hit. There wasn't any security that I saw and if the stealing wasn't enough to set some off, it was the drunk people. One artist left 1 day early as a drunk, at the end of the day, fell into their display and damaged some of their merchandise. 3. Sales for me were better than last year, however I only made a few extra dollars of profit over my booth expenses, gas and food. Last year I was a few dollars short of making my booth - $100. This could be that I had a different booth location, newer booth set up, products that people were looking for - I don't know, but nice to know it was better than last year. Of course it isn't anything to jump up and down over, making a profit that makes it worth my while is key and helps me determine whether I should return or not. 4. Customers/attendance. I thought the attendance was good. Not too many great quality customers - those who aren't picky about prices of art or craft. But some there were a few - as long as husbands weren't keeping an eye on wives and their spending. I had a LOT of people taking my business cards as some even fessed they don't have the money now, but want to keep me in mind for Christmas presents. 5. Neighbor crafts people. I had an annoying neighbor who would barge into my booth - when I had customers shopping, in the middle of talking to my husband or another craft friend - and interrupt the conversation to say something that wasn't important. She cost me 3 sales. She also didn't ask for help, she assumed I would help - like, "I need one of you (looking at my husband and I) to help me take down my canopy. " I did the show by myself with my husband joining me for packing up and she (the neighbor) did the same. It was just annoying. 6. How others did. Many didn't make their space, others made out well, it was a wide range of highs and lows among other artists. 7. Final thought... I don't think I can do the show again. Two days of intense heat - and no cooling station or water fountains - plus long hours - 11 - 7 and 11-6 Sat. and Sunday - it just wasn't worth it. I gave the show two tries - hoping it would be better, but when most are there for $6 beers with a 2$ refill and the average food item costing about $8 (and that is not including drinks) it doesn't help with customer spending. Also there is no admission - good but not great - as I saw it opening the doors for a lot of lookie loos. Take my review for whatever you want - like I said some did well, others did not - I did ok. Here's a few other photos - one is of my booth and the other from the park with a view of the Chesapeake Bay...
