This is a new venue. It begins Saturday May 25th. The show is really an "Art Market" running through the summer on a main thoroughfare between Chicago and the lake shore art town Saugatuck. Blue Star Highway is a scenic lake shore route with a nearly constant flow of traffic from May thru Sept. Blue Star is overflowing with "Antique" shops but has little for the people who want a unique handcrafted work of art.

8869108853?profile=originalArt on the Star aspires to meet this desire of the tourist by offering direct dealings with the artist in a art fair atmosphere on a regular basis throughout the summer--much like a farmer's market. Also, it intends to give the artist a chance to show and sell their work in a art hot spot area at minimal cost ($25 per day for 10x10 space and no commissions). Artists can come for Saturday or Sunday or both. Payment is due before set up.

Only handcrafted work by the artist will be accepted. Demonstrations are encouraged. Multi-media artist (like me) can show all medias. A restroom will be provided onsite. This is a venue by an artist for the artist. We need to stick together!

From Connie: Lots of artists live in this area. Do you have an open weekend and live nearby? This might work nicely for the convenience and the opportunity to catch the summer crowd who loves this area of the Michigan shoreline. I've been on this route in the summer. People cruising along on vacation, checking out the antique shops and galleries. The owner of the property is an artist and wants to help you cash in on these beautiful summer days. Can't beat the price!

  • This would be especially good for someone who wants to break into the business to spend time with other artists, learn lots of things about the business and get ready for prime time!

  • I am interested..have something this weekend and next..but will keep your site bookmarked!

    Thanks!

  • Also, just talked with Connie and she recomended this site: airbnb.com where people rent rooms of their homes. She tried it and it worked fine for her.

  • I just talked with a participant and she complained about the outrageous hotel/b&b prices in the area. I understand completely. For those who want to come but cannot afford the lodging, (most of us) I will provide a restroom and indoor sleeping (floor) space at no charge, and you can bring pillow/cushions/blankets, as she is going to do. The whole point of this is to provide space to show and sell your work in a tourist hot spot INEXPENSIVELY! So if you want to try it for a day or two or three(this weekend) and are willing to rough it a bit, don't let the exhorbitant fees of this beautiful lakeshore area stop you.

any questions don't hesitate to call me :269-543-4020

    thanks and Godspeed,

    Damian

  • Just head north on Blue Star, about 10-15 minutes away...depending on how much I'm enjoying the scenery! Same side of the road.

  • Just curious: How close are you to Mark Williams studio on Blue Star Highway?

  • Oh my! This sounds like a really nice project! Good luck! Will try to visit you all!
  • So, am I hearing not only a $25 fee but free camping on site? Sounds like a win to me. If two people come together they can take turns going to the beach and then all cookout together in the evening. Nice.

  • Just a note:

Because of the time crunch for Memorial weekend, I am handling most of the details quickly by phone(269-543-4020). I just ask artists to point me to imges of their work when applying, either through websites or email. Once I see that it is handcrafted and good quality, I call them back with acceptance and let them bring a signed application with them or fill one out here Saturday morning.

Artists can try Sat, Sun or Mon(Memorial Day) or all three, it's up to them. They are not obligated to do all three.

Show officially starts at 10:00am. Set up in the morning should be done by 9:30 am, so I invite participants to begin 7:30 --8:00 am, depending on how much time they require.

There is still room available in front, right on the roadside--excellent exposure!

    thanks,

    Damian

  •  I will bring my grill over so we can all use it for the weekend...the smell alone will bring them in! Some will be staying over in their vans in the back lot since lodging is impossible in Saugatuck. Any who want to park and sleep may do so. It should be a fun adventure!
