Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals
Made in Ohio is always labor day weekend, held in the historic living museum known as Hale Farm and Village. Hale is a representative of an 18th century Ohio farmland village, made of buildings brought to the property. From the parking lot you can see the Hale house and Barn, and through a short trail you walk into a village green lined by vintage homes and buildings. For labor day weekend this bucholic sight is embellished with 100+ white tents filled with amazing art, handcrafted…Continue
We are scurrying to get those last minute details done, the van packed, the dog sitter ready, and we plan to roll out to Novi for the Great Lakes Art Fair. We like to find art fair insiders where we go... so i am wondering who will be there? Hope we can cath up, say hello, and get to know you. We are in booth 507. Drop a line if you will be there!
I would love to talk with artists that have been accepted to the annual art festivl. Two years running i have buffed up my booth, taken what i believed to be amazing photos, wrote precise descriptions, and bam, rejected. In the body of the rejection email KRASL made it clear that people are rejected often several years running, and please try again. It baffles me. Granted i work in wearable fiber and wonder often if that is a limiting factor.
They do invite artists to attend…Continue
I keep hearing a lot of great things about this juried art festival. But i live in Cleveland ohio, and this would be a sizable road trip. I hear that it is always in the middle of July at one of the hottest times, and that the festival draws a good crowd. My questions are these:
1. have you done this show?
2. if yes, what were the best things about the show?
3. if yes, what were the shortcomings?
4. Can you offer some recommendations about the event - location,…Continue
We are disciplined time managers, planning production studio time carefully, and determining how much stock of our work to have on hand at any given time. And we ramp up on stock starting in early fall, knowing the volume of business will spike near Christmas. In spite of proactive planning i am sad to say the day before a show, or the week leading up to it we find ourselves sleep deprived, working day and night to just get ready, have enough on hand, and be able to well represent our…Continue
Schedello! was billed by Zapplication as a premier music and art festival set in the beautiful botanical gardens of Schedel, in Elmore Ohio, about 15 minutes east of Toledo. The back-story was that last year was their inaugural year - an ambitious one day event with music, food, art and a vintage car show was planned. This year they dropped the car show, increased the event to two days, and made access to the art venue free (although to get to anything else there was a ticket price of…Continue
We were juried in, and are getting ready for the festival, but wonder who else will be there? If you have done the show before are there any great tips to share? Value your feedback! And if you have done the show, any recommendations for places to lodge for the weekend?
I have a display question for fiber artists. I hand dye silk (Shibori) and have just decided to move to using pro panels with waterfall racks. Initially i had thought of putting each piece on a hanger, and hanging them on the waterfall racks so they cascade down neatly revealing the pattern in the silk but my business partner suggested instead to just hang the silk from the waterfall hooks in loose knots, allowing me to place 2-3 waterfall racks per panel. I should have taken pictures of…Continue
We are great at squirrling away some of the profits of the booming sales leading to Christmas, however it seems like some of the down months (January, February, March) when there is little of any art events going on, and our income drops sharply is just when all of the big applications are due. We had thought we planned sufficiently for those costs, as well as operating expenses but this year we have underplanned, and find ourselves scrapping together funds to apply for…Continue
I know we spend our lives focused on art fairs, presenting our product, production, development of image, and the like, but I have a serious question for you. Is your studio space in your home, or outside of it?
Our studio space was half of the basement, but as our business has grown we find that half the house is being engulfed.... and it gets stressful to just find a quiet place away from the action..... So we have begun to consider a studio outside of our home. Im just curious…Continue
My husband and i have been doing art fairs for 4 years now, and always try to be carefully strategic as to where to put our check out counter and cash area to ensure it is accessible only to us. And until yesterday it was a great strategy. Neither of us are certain how, but believe that it was toward the last minutes of the show that someone got in and took all of our $20 bills from below the till. i am certain this was while i was distracted to the front of the tent by one customer, and…Continue
We have been looking for a show in November to fill our schedule, and there is a show on Zapplication titled The Highland Art and Craft Show, in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. The primary jury deadline has passed, however the application indicates they will accept applications for several more weeks.
Have you ever done this event? What has been your experience. I recognize the experience can vary drastically dependent on what you sell. I hand dye silk, and make funky fiber…Continue
Odd question, but something we have been pondering more and more recently. Do you feel that shows that use services like zapplication offer a higher end experience, higher proportion of buyers, larger crowds? We have done three shows that are zapplication, and initially i believed the statement that the show was higher end, brought large amounts of buyers, but the last one or two were not so much so. While they were lovely events, well organized, and drew nice crowds, the ratio of crowd to…Continue
Yorkfest Festival is coming up on August 23-24 in York Pennsylvania, and yes, we will be there. We had been hoping for an art fair that would put us out close to Pennsylvania Amish country to visit a dear aunt, so when the jury gave us the thumbs up we were excited.
But i dont know alot about the show, and wonder if you have done it, and what suggestions you might have for the show. We are located in what seems to be a good spot on the Rails and Trails section, close to the action,…Continue
We were at the Ohio Sauerkraut Festival in Waynesville, Ohio, and all set up... everything a go. Cell phone had 4 bars, square was up and running until about 11:30am when the entire bunch of us (440 artist vendors) lost internet and ability to run credit cards. In fact, i lost everything but texting capability. As we scrambled to rethink our processes we all realized this was an outage, or an overrun of the bandwidth of the internet provider/ cell towers. Througout the entire weekend we…Continue
Our art business is growing, and i have received several invitations for shows that are far from Northern Ohio, and my home. Considering they are outdoor shows, it would mean i have to pack the tent, and supplies along with the art, and get it to the venue. Short of renting a small truck (our suv is aging, and i would not trust it on a cross country adventure) and driving there, I wonder what the best way would be to get the goods there, and myself there. I wonder how do you handle this? …Continue
Hi there, Still looking for feedback from anyone who may have done this show in the past. It is coming up the second weekend of October. Their package indicates the expected volume of visitors this year is 400,000 to 450,000. The jurors are from Colombus Gift Mart. I would just love to hear about your experiences, advice, etc. It is our first time being juried into the event, and seeing that the size of the event is huge I would imagine someone out there has some knowledge. I would…Continue
