Des Moines Art Festival - Cleaning up after the storm

Just about my favorite art fair is taking place this weekend in Des Moines, Iowa, June 25-27. It is one of those shows that has inculcated all the "best practices" of art fairs across the country and has developed their own regional specialties, making it a destination event for art fair patrons who are thrilled to have en event of this caliber in their city and thank the artists for being there. How sweet is that?

The art fair opened on Friday and then Friday night as the artists were… Continue

Featured Artist: John Leben, digital art

With the advent of digital cameras many people got into the photography game -- now

it was so easy, point and shoot, send the file to the printer and voila an artist is born!

That is not what John Leben is doing. A former video producer, painter, graphic designer, and documentary producer he has been compelled by technology since college days, exploring its various uses as an art medium. The continuous changing landscape in the graphic arts field led him to the… Continue

Carol Sedestrom Ross - Influential in the Modern Craft Movement

I would like to extend my condolences to Carol Sedestrom Ross's family and friends. Carol died suddenly from a heart attack on June 14. Her passing marks an important milestone in the business of the nation's fine craft shows. She was probably the most consequential figure, bringing craftspeople into the mainstream and creating quality marketplaces so they could earn a living.

Carol was the founder of the American Craft Council, who started the first wholesale craft… Continue

Old Town Art Fair - A Chicago Fan's Perspective

The art fairs that are really the coolest are the ones that are deeply embedded in the local culture. Last weekend's Old Town Art Fair in Chicago (June 12 and 13) is one of those. The residents of that

neighborhood are devoted to it and the tradition is deep as it goes back to 1950 when a group of Old Towners decided to have a party. Fast forward to today and you have one of Chicago's most beloved events -- 61 years old!

The first time we participated in the… Continue

"Work of Art: The Next Great Artist" on Bravo

Is this new Bravo reality show a good thing for the arts and artists? Here is what judge China Chow has to say:

"We're trying to reach a mainstream audience with this and hopefully it's something that, as the episodes air and they get to see what we've done, hopefully they will put their stamp of approval on it. But ultimately, I feel like it's a gift more to mainstream America to be able to witness art -- artists making… Continue

Art Fair History: The Riot that almost Killed Allentown

Any of you participating in the Allentown Art Festival this weekend in Buffalo? It is a big sprawling event that has had its problems with crowd control -- it is THE big summer event. Back in the 1970's it had over 700 exhibitors (not artists-exhibitors, I'm sure you get the distinction). Today maybe 350? Still a big event.

Any of you remember the 1970's? They were wild times, lots of fun and exuberance. Did any of you participate in the show in those days?

Here is… Continue
